The other thing the R4 did was push air across only about four rows of chips instead of about fifteen rows of chips. With long paths like in the for-some-reason popular long tube design, the air cooling the rearmost chips is already quite hot so it doesn't work as well. Keeping the path short means you still have relatively cool air even at the last stage, which means you can reduce the linear flow rate (and therefore the blower speed and noise) and still get as effective cooling.

Spondoolies proved how bad a long path could be with their rack gear ages ago, and yet Bitmain still upped the ante for S7, S9 and the like. When they landed on S15 they had finally realized it was dumb and flipped things around.

Changing the S9 case won't shorten the flow path. You could remove all the heatsinks and turn them sideways for a more R4-like flow, or you could pull individual boards and put fans directly on them instead of blowing from one end.

S9's are a dime a dozen   my mod is easy to do and is pretty quiet.

R4's break and are costly

A lot depends on your tolerance for f'ing with the r4.

Well not if you count that passive cooled miner presented in this forum, or the bm chips on a usb stick (and its larger brother).

Another solution could be immersion, which might give you more flexibility to cool the liquid (or tank if Novec).

Hint about fans: The smaller, the louder. A big slow moving fan can move about the same amount of air than a small faster moving fan.

If you want to quiet down things, you must go bigger. This is why the R4 is a bit larger than an S9, despite using just two hashboards. Its slow moving but large scrolling fan is the trick.

I keep the opinion that if you reverse engineer the R4 case design, you could make a custom case using the same principle for S9 hash boards. They are not shaped THAT different (perhaps filling the missing sink fans and reorienting them for vertical airflow is needed).

First thing you notice is the R4 does not move the air horizontally (sideways), but vertically (upwards), while keeping the hashboards in the same relative position. This does not work well in a warehouse (unless at the top of the racks or something).

All that is needed is a custom case, and a similar scrolling fan. You could reuse the boards and controllers from S9s.

The r4 really seems to be a very good option. Are there similar miners with such a sound level? they can also be bigger in hight

The r4 was the last home-friendly miner the world created, at least to my knowledge, from that point onward, mining gears became more of an industrial thing where noise is probably in the bottom of the list for manufactures, so if you want quite and somehow efficient you need R4 or follow phill's advice and modify an S9, i really see no other options for you, sorry.

it is good if you want one or two units.

you mention power cost is not important. price per th is important.

How much power do you have?
what is power cost?
how much room do you have?
do you have  120volt?
do you have 220volt?

the r4 is hard to find
the r4 takes up space.

s9s are easy to get
s9s are cheap.
s9s take up very little space.

so do you want :

1300 watts
2600 watts
3900 watts
5200 watts
6500 watts

if you really don't care about efficiency and want something quite by default , get yourself some Antminer R4, it's not really bad in terms of efficiency , it does 93w per th i guess, which is a little bit worse than S9, it does take more space but it's the only semi-industrial quiet miner I know of, if you want really really quiet go with sidehack's stuff.

Currently I have the antminer s9. I also plan to buy other miners so If you can recommend some, it would be appreciated a lot.

My only requirements are actually that I can run the miners quietly and that they do not take up much space. Also the price per TH is important.
I do not care so much about energy efficiency though

@NotFuzzyWarm do you mean something like this? Cheesy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCGLGXyBhNE I think this would be too big, I should be able to put it into a 45x30x40cm bag. Since the APW3++ would also be too loud I am thinking about a sound isolating box

Buy the s17 pro 50t run it on low it is fairly quiet  you can sound proof the mining area you must have a 20 amp 240 volt power source

You should post a picture of your setup if you can. Typically fans get up to 8000 rpm on ASIC rigs so you should aim to get it up to there which isn't very quiet.

Depending on how big the hashboards are is how big you should buy the fans. Typically you want more exhaust than intake for negative pressure if your looking for a closed system, but fans usually operate at the same rpm when they are attached to the same system.

There several different miners manufactured and we do not have crystal balls to know what you have....

A) What make/model of miner? They are all different and produce different amounts of heat.
B) There are NO 'quiet' fans that can provide enough airflow to keep any miner made in past few years cool when running at full speed. High airflow from fans at the pressures needed = loud. Period.

If you are up for building a custom case then use a centrifugal blower like used in a furnace. Only they can move the amount of air needed quietly.

How many fans / how much airflow do the fans need to produce in total in order to operate the miner at full capacity but so that it is quiet? How should I place the fans? I know, I need to build a custom metal case in which I place the hash boards.
