There is a chance they MIGHT work, however, it's not recommended. It's best to have at least the same series or similar on a multi gpu rig. For example R7 2XX with R9 2/3XX is fine, 2x R9 2/3XX would be ideal though. There is a chance they might work with the latest drivers, as the previous poster recommended, also, keep crossfire disabled from the driver options.

In theory, this SHOULD work with the new "blockchain compute" 17.30 driver

Any PREVIOUS driver that worked with the RX 5xx series DID NOT support the R9 2xx series at all.

I'm actually a bit shocked that the blockchain compute driver has as wide a range of support as it has - and more than a bit ticked off at AMD that their previous drivers that worked on the RX 5xx series didn't support all other GCN models like this one does.

I'm also MAJORLY ticked off that this didn't show up for LINUX first, or at the same time, given the BULK of cryptocoin mining is done on LINUX-based rigs.

I've spent a bit of time to try to get them working on window and had no luck. In ethos it definitely does not work, as it won't even boot up.

I would recommend that put R290 and RX580 in separate rigs, just spend a couple of hundreds more
but it will save you a lot of time, efforts and headaches, since they are actually two generation cards
Putting different generation cards in different rigs means easy setup, easy confirmation, easy update, and earlier mining

I have tried that under windows without any luck. The system recognised them, but have not managed to make them both mining, The 290 was mining perfectly, but the second was just sitting on basic frequencies mining almost nothing.
But may it work? Probably yes after a hard playing. Should you do it? No. R series are better with 15.12 (or so) drivers and RX series are better with 17.2 (or so). So I would stick with HD,R in one rig and RX in the second
