Maybe you can use the 6+ GPU mod. It can help you to get the system to recognise up to 8 GPU in a system.

What PSU do you have?
Check risers, try with a different one once you identify which card is failing.
Windows or linux? What drivers are you using? I think that for 5 cards or more you need to mod the driver (Windows): https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/7xgpu-windows-modding-amd-video-driver-is-the-answer-712228

One of the card is not recognised by the Windows system. It is shown in the device manager. So it is not the power supply problem.

What power supply do you have? Maybe its degrading. Does the card function if used alone?

You may remove the driver completely using something like DDU Display Driver Uninstaller. Then reinstall.

I'll try, thanks.

5 cards in total, 1 not functioning. The cards are not overclocked. I have tried a diffrent PCI slot, same problem... I have also tried another GPU, same problem...

Is that Overclocked? You can remove the card, and put into another slot. How many card do you have in total?

I have been mining Ethereum with some R9 280x cards for a while, but suddenly I have issues with 1 GPU.

Under Device manager I see a yellow ! sign on GPU5. When I click on properties it says "Windows stopped this device because It was having issues" I have tried to disable & enable it, and reinstall the driver. Both failed.
What else can I try? Could it be a power supply issue?

Any help is appreciated.
