are there any special GPUs announced which are gonna be pretty badass for scrypt mining?  a new  ATI or whatever?

Radeon R9 290 (Hawaii Pro) ~900KHash/sec @ 330W = 2.73KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 290X (Hawaii XT) ~1000KHash/sec @ 360W = 2.71KHash/Watt

I got five 7870s.

If I run my cards on a pci-e 1x slot is this going to degrade their hashing performance?

Can I run two cards in one slot (pci-e 2 16x) if I get a riser card and some extension cables?

Any caveats I'm not seeing here?

1, Running a card at 1x slot will not decrease hashing performance

2, It's technically impossible to use 2 cards in one slot
