That's not how fonts work. I work in a design department, and fonts cost us anywhere between $0-$5000 for 200 users for print only. We recently started using some of them on our website, and had to go back and pay extra for an updated license. If coin devs use something readily usable, that's one thing, but they can't always buy a license that allows everyone on Earth to use the font.
I know this, and that's the noobish thing about these coins. They are dev'ing a coin just for a quick profit and not investing a single dime on it. If they want to do a world-changing coin, they should put their wallets where their mouth is, and spend some time and money creating something marketable. Too many times i have seen coins released with stolen/not licensed content (coinye, smurfs, etc) and devs profiting from it.

Yep. plenty of scams and wallet stealers. And your encouraging one more entry point for that.
Almost everything you install on your computer could steal your wallet.dat if you're not careful enough. I doubt most people here run their wallets in a separate server under a limited permissions user in a chrooted environment. Asking that to a BTCTalk user is ok, Average user nope.

I think we're still a ways away from average users joining the fray.
We could be nearer than you think Wink

I actually agreed with this. I was just saying you should, instead of you can.

Coin devs should use something readily usable, or BUY (yes, they should invest in their coins) the fonts for free distribution. The more cohesion, the better image. Worked a lot of years on a publicity firm, this is a must.

Most users on here are wary of installers and would rather compile from source, or use a trusted QT wallet. Installers could easily contain viruses that are not seen in the source code.
Yeah, because:

  • There haven't been open source scam coins... ooh wait!
  • Hidden premines in out-in-the-open code haven't existed yet.... ooh snap!
  • Wallet.dat scavengers exist, they have been in the code, people have overlooked them, tears have been shed.

Yep. plenty of scams and wallet stealers. And your encouraging one more entry point for that.

Also, you're missing the point... I'm referring to AVERAGE USERS, not BTCTalk users. If/when cryptocoins get wider acceptance, they will need easier install procedures and use-case scenarios. Coin design is just terrible nowadays, even Bitcoin wallet is a shameful thing. Mycellium and Armory are a step forward, but shit needs to get done faster.

I think we're still a ways away from average users joining the fray.

You absolutely should present your BTCTalk account in the OP. People are rightly wary of users whose first post is a brand new, innovative, country/anon coin with PoW/PoS.

Present your BTCTalk account: Yes, use it as the OP owner: No. Why? well, it just so happens that someday you may want to pass development to the community or to another dev. Handing your account is the worst thing you can do. Handing the coin's account is something more flexible and easier to get along with.

I actually agreed with this. I was just saying you should, instead of you can.

Overall this is just terrible advice.
Yeah... keep telling yourself that

I agree with having guidelines for colors, font, etc., but coin owners should not be supplying downloads of fonts. Font licenses vary wildly, from totally free for anything to only being used by one person for print only (no web). You can list the name of your font, and any professional that actually wants to use it will get their own license for that font.

I understand the reasoning behind this, but bandwidth can get expensive, and Mega automatically starts downloads for me, so I don't see what the problem is.

The problem is that you aren't an AVERAGE user. Most people here on BTCTalk are fairly intelligent. Average users don't understand MEGA. I deal with them in my business, their idea of a screenshot is having a Word document with the pasted image sent by email, just terrible. They don't know nor want to learn how to use Imgur, MEGA, dropbox. Average users are terrible, but they are the biggest "bag holders" because they have, in sum, a lot of money that needs to change hands. If letting their money go away need complicated procedures, then it won't be spent.

Branding guidelines:This is one of the most overlooked facts of most altcoins. Heck, i have only found ONE (yes, just one) altcoin with branding guidelines, and it is a pityful job of branding guidelines. What do you need for a branding guideline? you ask... at least the following: Coin colors with hex values and if possible pantone colors too; font face with a download of the TTF, OTF or WOFF; SVG and AI logos, along with the PNG. There's a lot of things to do, but leave that to a professional.

I agree with having guidelines for colors, font, etc., but coin owners should not be supplying downloads of fonts. Font licenses vary wildly, from totally free for anything to only being used by one person for print only (no web). 4.- A FRIGGEN INSTALLER: You want your average user to pick a folder to decompress your ".rar" (augh, .rar! c'mon)!? You're doomed pal... At least an NSIS or InnoSetup and Ubuntu PPA are the minimum requirement here for linux users... Mac, i dunno how is that, but make it easy and use the most standard use-case to install.

Most users on here are wary of installers and would rather compile from source, or use a trusted QT wallet. Installers could easily contain viruses that are not seen in the source code.

Quote
5.- Proper download services: I know you all like MEGA, but most users are used to just click and the download starts. At most, there's a "Your download will begin soon" message after clicking on download. Don't use Google Drive (it throttles downloads), Mega, Dropbox, Skydrive.

I understand the reasoning behind this, but bandwidth can get expensive, and Mega automatically starts downloads for me, so I don't see what the problem is.

10.- Create and use DAILY a BTCTalk account for your coin: You can present your BTCTalk user on the OP, but for the sake of branding, your BTCTalk thread should be posted by a user with the exact same name as your coin. That user must log at least once a day, most users will begging FUDing if you don't log in after 2-3 days.

You absolutely should present your BTCTalk account in the OP. People are rightly wary of users whose first post is a brand new, innovative, country/anon coin with PoW/PoS.

Jackpot coin is not perfect and that shows i do not ask for perfection from you all..
i *ask for people to just try.. please just try and pick and choose what to get involved in etc.
i chose Jackpotcoin because it did have some major new features and it's great i have no regrets
and more importantly i chose it because when it was posted there was nothing but color coins being made and anon coins starting to be cloned.
its the context.. i had little to choose from.. does that make sense ?

iGotSpots your reputation is the worst in Crypto and i am always amazed you open your mouth (stick to your shell accounts old friend lol)
people this lunatic wacko has threatened to be me up twice and threatened to sue me 3 times via pm here and on cryptsy chat
and not only that he has admitted to stalking me and trolling me because he said "trolling me is fun" word for word on Cryptsy chat.
why ?
He says because i "defamed" his clone coin that calls "his business" (old drama from last year)
but i never did and as a matter of fact i even complimented his coins key new feature / aspect numerous time and have witnesses
as well as witnesses to his stalking me for a full year roughly.. one argument at the forum and the guy to this day hunts me lol

The guy was on Cryptsy chat before bragging about being a *certified Mensa Genius
but would a Mensa Genius act this way ? He is mentally ill and suffers from delusions of grandeur and massive anger issues.
i have caught him red handed lying so many time i can barely keep track of every incident..
or simply throwing a fit like demanding his shitty clone coin be banned from Cryptsy because he was mad they didn't add it quick enough..

throw 'em a shovel and he will dig himself to China lol

for the one millionth time Spots if you wanna piece come get it.. unlike you i have one account and one name and i am not hiding.

or feel free to mock me for being poor or using nvidia gpu's then threaten to sue me and beat me up while bragging about being a Mensa Genius while trolling on me.
i can't believe you even step to me, you know i can bury you with a million stories of incidents where you were caught looking like a complete idiot
..with a ton of witness.

You are out of your league Spots and you know it.. even when i am stuck on defense being watched by 12 mods as you sit there attacking me with freedom
i STILL utterly dominate your ass.. if i wanted to ? i could make you shit your cocky little pants and make you cry like a fucking baby.
You should meet up with me for an IRC Troll show down sometime on an un-moderated IRC channel.. i will eat you alive with no effort lol
OR..
You could back up your mouth and finally after all the threats ..comedown to Kelowna BC, Canada and beat me up tough guy
ROFL fucking clown

PS:
Hey you 2 idiots what in gods name did your attacks on me have to do with the topic at hand ?
ooooooooh you win this debate  Roll Eyes
how "mensa" of you lol

we don't need branding because there shouldn't be any more coins anyway.
so your point is moot.

improving marketing on more stupid fucking shitty clone coins means sweet fuck all !

There is more than enough for us to "make work" or improve on..

and...

edit:
All of them are a useless fucking fail anyway.. either you improve or match the usefulness of Bitcoin or it's a Ponzi /the end
and NO we don't need Ponzi's regardless of what colors they use   Roll Eyes

You all seem to have forgotten what the point was or got here late and never learned from the start.
A year ago 90% of what gets posted here would be laughed off the forum in a heart beat.. you new guys showed up and totally fucked up our scene bad !
What we need in fact is for you scammy fucktards to get lost..

You're a noob too still in his first year. Few have been as big a cancer as you have

You want to invite new people not scare them off with your incoherent, schizophrenic, barely legible by elementary school standards rants

Says the guy with Jackpotcoin in his signature.... Wink Wink Wink j/k

Seriously, yeah, i've lost already a lot on scamcoins here so anyways, i don't enjoy too much watching this hemorrage of new altcoins daily.

I was just spewing bile from the fact that i'm working on a personal project and it has become cumbersome finding stupid coins' icons, fonts, etc....

EDIT: Also, let me point out the fact that Bitcoin fails miserably on almost any point i've told here. Bitcoin branding guidelines are *almost* nonexistent.

Warning: Rude language, if you're sensitive just don't read...

Yes, as you read it... you're doing an awful job for us, service developers, Why you ask? Here, lemme make a list for you all to digest easily:

  • 1.- Branding guidelines:This is one of the most overlooked facts of most altcoins.
  • 2.- Home Pages that load fast and don't bog down most peoples' CPU: Most DOMs of the most popular pages are awful, and they take FOREVER (in internet terms) to load. Run your page through a 512mb ram/1 core virtual box instance running chrome and you'll understand.
  • 3.- URI HANDLING: "Gooby plz, rly?" no correct URI handling means DEATH to your coin's integration to other Apps. stat... research how to do it. And, along with that...
  • 4.- A FRIGGEN INSTALLER: You want your average user to pick a folder to decompress your ".rar" (augh, .rar! c'mon)!? You're doomed pal... At least an NSIS or InnoSetup and Ubuntu PPA are the minimum requirement here for linux users... Mac, i dunno how is that, but make it easy and use the most standard use-case to install.
  • 5.- Proper download services: I know you all like MEGA, but most users are used to just click and the download starts. At most, there's a "Your download will begin soon" message after clicking on download. Don't use Google Drive (it throttles downloads), Mega, Dropbox, Skydrive.
  • 6.- DNS seeds: don't ever ever ever ever launch your coin without DNS seeds. If you use your coin with IRC seeds it will get tagged as virus by a lot of virus scan tools. A shitcoin asks to "addnode" on the .conf file.... plz, don't....
  • 7.- Github naming matters: i would have second toughts compiling and running a project located at github named "uranus-stinks/shitcoin". Plz, only use a name if you can register an account on github with the same name for the project as the name of the user. If any of both are taken, change your coin's name.
  • 8.- Socialize: I'm a nerd too... but your twitter account must be your most beloved and used possesion. Please, try to create an account with the exact same name of your coin before releasing your coin, if you do, people will find you easier. Coin updates must be twittered, posted on BTCtalk, etc.
  • 9.- Be tolerant: Bitcointalk has some great users, but there are an awful lot of trolls here. Tolerate them and treat them with respect. Brats are brats, don't be one.
  • 10.- Create and use DAILY a BTCTalk account for your coin: You can present your BTCTalk user on the OP, but for the sake of branding, your BTCTalk thread should be posted by a user with the exact same name as your coin. That user must log at least once a day, most users will begging FUDing if you don't log in after 2-3 days.

I have seen a good amount of coins die because of some fault like these. Print this, tattoo it to your hand, i dunno.... do whatever you can to keep your coin visible, fresh and your community alive.

EDIT:

New "muy-importante" point:

  • 11.- UPDATE YOUR OP TITLE WITH LATEST NEWS: Updating the OP lets watchers know what's happening to your coin with just a quick glance at "Show new replies to your posts" or "Watchlist" here on BTCTalk. Do it.
