bitmain told me this would work with putty to do a firmware change.  the unit isn't even powering up the fans and is blinking red I'm really worried and it's going to be hard to find a buyer.  I think I'm going to get male connectors. this is a better fix than the jump to ground paperclip I think

The problem I see with paperclip is getting a good connection on debug spots.  If the paperclip is losing connection bouncing back and forth it will make doing firmware hard.

You need to get it secured on debug side.

with the raspberry pi serial cable how do I access the debug holes on the s3 antminer?  do I need a converter of some sort or ritp off the plastic rectangle and just use the wire into the hole?
black wire is to ground

Not sure what you have at your access.  I would not rip off plastic female end if were thinking of same thing.

I would get some sort of wire/metal that would fit in it and allow to it in S3 debug holes.   Something great would be if you have something like some nice male to male wires.  They make different sizes so you would need to get one that fits in debug holes and female side of serial to usb connector.  Example: http://www.adafruit.com/products/758 (I did not check size this is just a example of good wiring to use).

But I'm sure there are cheaper way's of doing it as well.   A wire could work as long as it makes contact.  Just make sure it is secured I would not want to try to flash it with wires losing connection randomly.
