The biggest amount of known stolen bitcoin is 144K that the FBI looted from SR1.
Compared to historical and ongoing heists the ones happened in bitcoin world were rather insignificant so far.

With the exchanges that went down with customers' fund, users are now less willing to keep their bitcoin on exchanges.
so people are hoarding coins so value goes down. it looks like it wont be a true currency anytime soon

One of the selling points of bitcoin is the decentralized trust.
You don't have to trust anybody, not the government, not the central bank.
So I see no reason why you should trust exchanges with your bitcoins.
We will have to wait till smart contracts replace escrows.

Yes, coinlenders, Mtgox, pirate and bitcoinica. All very deceptive scams.
Pirate was clearly operating an obvious ponzi, while gox was having USD withdrawal problems for months before getting down...
That is silly to blame people for being scammed in the event they come across one of these scams. If the person volunteered their money it's one thing but when someone digs a whole and covers it up to hide the fact it is there, is a whole different story. The internet is like uncharted territory and the scammers are pirates but in your mind they aren't that bad or to blame.. 
I am not saying the scammers are blameless. Of course, they should be blamed. If they are caught, they should be punished.
I am merely trying to find a silver lining from the point of view of the scammed.

Don't send anything to any address promising you to profit from your deposit. Don't use any means of transaction offering an unrivaled deal/rates. Just stick to the norm, what everyone uses, and you are safe. Not just for bitcoin but as a rule of thumb, this is very handy to go by.

The problem with bitcoin is... you can look like you're a bitcoin fan or pioneer talking about anonymity and privacy. As bitcoin users, you can and should be able to remain anonymous. The issue is, we let the seller reamin anonymous and this will never work. EVER. There has to be a trade off. If you are in business, you have to be transparent. Our problem is, we allow sellers to be anonymous and this is a recipe for scam-o-rama. It allows for the screw 1, serve 4 screw 1 serve 4 mentality.
IMHO - If you are a seller or in retail, then put anonymity behind you. You gotta be transparent for customers

There are infos about double-spends in the blockchain, but they are understimated, as far I know.
And that much of scam and fraud are people too used to be inprisioned by the banking system, that when they are free they don't know how to act. Plus people looking for easy money.
Wouldn't this primarily relate to 0/1 confirmation transactions, which would be small amounts?
For larger amounts, wouldn't people wait for 6 confirmations, thereby eliminating double spending risk?

On the other hand, it seems to me people make bitcoin decisions more carelessly.
For example, quite a lot of people fall in those hyip scams.
Will they give 10 bucks to a random person in the street when that guy promised to give them back $20 the next day? Guess not.

I fail to see why we'd want mass adoption from idiots who'll cry when they get scammed.
Stupid people will get scammed, doesn't matter if they lose bitcoins or fiat money, they'll manage to lose it anyways. Some gamble, some invests in schemes to get rich, others think they can download money generators, or use scripts to fool casinos. Those people are doomed as soon as they get internet access, sadly.
There are a lot of scams and frauds because people who need money see potential in it!

The amount of scams that are done to steal your fiat money is a 99% against 1% BTC which is still in alpha tier development. Scammers gonna scam. With regulations you could tell the police, but the dilemma arishes: Is said regulation beneficial considering the cons that would come for the BTC ecosystem?
There are many scams and frauds in life period, not just bitcoin, but it's usually always greed + stupidity that is the cause of being scammed.

I'm not "glad" that there are scams. However, there is a positive effect, which is inoculation of the system.
As scams happen, and businesses fail, and trust is tried and tested and broken, it builds the resolve and resiliency of the system. Just as a society never exposed to any virus may be wiped out at the first appearance of one, so too an economy never exposed to fraud/failure is more susceptible to a massive disruption when one arises.
You can also think of this in terms of natural selection. Weak businesses and people will lose their money, the strong will earn, keep, and build with it. Capital tends to move toward its best caretaker in a free market (though it's not a straight line to get there - many bumps and regressions along the way).

but the thing i and you may both agree on, is to not allow such nasty things to grow. meaning no one should foolishly put their life at risk entering a hazard zone. by this i mean do not put your whole life savings or full bitcoin hoard into unknown third parties
