If there is one good bit of IT advice I could give to everyone it would be:

Backup your personal/important/vital/legal data!

But it seems that unsolicited advice is rarely taken Sad
With bitcoin it could cost you more than you wish to chalk up to experience. 

Learning the hard way is not fun.
And it is possible to learn from other mistakes.
