The gold coins were called Escudos (or doubloons in slang), the silver ones were called Reales. Main advantage of gold is that sea water does not corrode them unlike the silver reales which are heavily corroded when recovered from ship wrecks.
1 Escudo used to be worth 16 Reales.
cool stuff, yep the silver ones had to have a crust removed from them, saw a few more for sale in a Dive shop display case when I was a kid pretty sure those were gold. They inspired me to look for treasure at a young age. When I was a little older ( 13/14) I made a metal detector from Radio Shack parts lol... I never did find much on the beach's ( a small silver ring) but it was a lot of fun back then just to look and check out Bikini's.
Bought a nice Garrett GTI detector back in 2006 tried to get my kids interested in treasure hunting.... nope lol ... they did like Archery though
I have had a few interested people but they are struggling to work out the value as its a bit of a specialist subject.

I am in the UK and usually buy gold from Hatton Garden Metals, Atkinsons, Baird&Co. For silver I use a Belgium dealer - goldsilver.be as we get with 20% VAT on silver in the UK.
As a Belgian I can vouch for goldsilver.be, that's also my go-to place for bullion. Great prices in euro and fast and decent shipping!

I buy mainly as an investment so its gold as close to spot as possible e.g. Krugerannds, Britannias, bars. After I hit a decend amount of OZ's I then started buying a few collecable pieces to keep things interesting like the Doubloons, proof 1oz gold Queens Beasts series, and the Pistrucci sovereign set.

A full set of gold Escudos from the 1500's during King Phillip II of Spain's reign, also known as Gold Doubloons of pirate treasure legend fame.

Gold 2 Escudos (Doubloon)
Gold 4 Escudos (Double Doubloon)
At this point in history the 8 Escudos (piece of 8 ) did not exist, inflation and the large denomination came under a later king.
These coins are hammered coins not milled like modern coins. The quality of strike was not considered important at the time of creation and only the weight of the coin was considered crucial. The Doubloon and Doubloon however both have excellent quality strikes with a nicely centred image.
Coins were sourced from well known dealers in Paris and Spain.
