Try LENOVO IdeaPad 320-15IKBN. This is just what you need. I got it on my own and it works perfect. 100% of price is cost-efficient.

If you have $ 500, that's enough for good equipment from Asus. A friend from my team uses it and praises it very much. It is important to have a minimum i5 processor and an SSD drive.

Would recommend you ACER E5 with i5 6th or 7th gen CPU and a gtx 940m GPU. Also has a 1080p display which is very good for a price of 500$. I also think that this laptop will fit well to your needs.

Given your budget you can buy brand new Dell with similar configuration you have to spend for refurbished thinkpad

I will suggest go for Dell, search online stores you will get many options to choose from

you will choose it according to your usage or what you will use for  then next step look for the suitable prices around that number you had mentioned
if you need with high qualities below 500$$ better move to used laptop market  it's really helpful low prices with a good features ..
in my opinion the cheapest now in the market and good  brand lenovo, Acer https://www.lifewire.com/best-laptops-under-500-4043278

We bought our first laptop branded Toshiba and that was year 2010.  It lasted for 3 years before it totally collapsed and malfunctioned.  Then it was replaced by HP which I bought in clearance from the store my husband is working at.  For 5 years it is still in good condition and well functional.  There for I could recommend the HP brand for tough use.

With $ 500 and according to your needs, your advice on buying a used Acer Core i7 laptop is enough, in addition to the pretty spec, the price is quite affordable in my opinion

ThinkPads would be a great option I think. I don't know how good they would be in your prices range. I do know that they are well known for their great battery life. You may even consider getting a Chromebook. They are all quick cheap and they'll let you do the basics that you want. You shouldn't have any problem really buying something in your price range, since your needs are very simple. A Mac wouldn't fit in your price range, but I don't think you need one anyway.
