Interesting project! Few questions:

1) Wouldn't an anonymous blockchain be more appropriate for this?

2) How is it prevented that someone can't just fool the system to think they are seeding when in fact they are not?

3) Where is the technicals explained I could not find whitepaper or anything like it on website?

I think you will not get any answer to your questions,this thread is almost 3 years old.Page is still working,but by what I read this project has never managed to make somebody profit with torrent seeding.One user say he is upload over 200 GB of data and get only 3 cents for that.

Torrents are not so popular today,fast internet in combination with IPTV and some other ways of watching various media content with more and more copyright protection leads to the fact that there is less and less torrent sites today.

Individuals can be targeted with the existing systems, so JoyStream just adds another level to make this easier.

The fact that it's now monetized with JoyStream, increase the motivation to pursue more people.

If you want to go this route, just make sure you keep your receiving address as anonymous as possible. {Single use and also no other cross transfers from addresses you normally use for other things on a daily basis}

It does add value, for seeders who has to pay for bandwidth being used by other leeching from it. {In many countries these bandwidth cost is expensive and many people cannot seed, due to this}

the only problem i see here is if individuals can become a target for the music industry and hollywood studios for sharing content just because is a paid seeder, they have try to take down torrents for a while now but could this be really safe for individuals?

well i dont understand the busyness there if seeders gain and if theres ads on site and torrent maeger it can pay the bTC to people other wise it cant.

What?  Shocked

So if I get you you're saying something like, "what's all the commotion about ... random nonsensical garbage ... somehow 'people' came into play ..."

Are you trying to say that there have to be ads on the site else the people won't get paid? I think the concept is that the leechers can pay a small fee and from there come the funds.

Yeah, that's the point of Paid Seeding Grin
@muhrohmat why did you ask about it?

You are pulling a shitstorm your way, when you allow people to make money from selling Copyright material they do not own.

What I have found with torrent sharing, was that these companies {Who owns the copyrighted material} were not that focused on tracking and convicting each person who has downloaded a copyrighted copy of their movie or game... They put more effort into tracking and finding the people who re-sell their products. {The monetary value to take these things to court, and the return on this makes no sense} So they target the people who sell the software or movie and they stop mass distribution of the product}

Expect a lot of litigation for providing this service/client when it goes viral. If I were in your shoes, I would include a detailed disclaimer in the Tos, where you protect your liability, if people use it to distribute and sell copyrighted material.

Good luck, it has huge potetial, if it's used for legal content.

Torrent listings sites already indirectly make money from copyrighted material, by adding a decentralised monetisation layer to that, it just multiplies the overheads of any copyright enforcement agencies a great deal. I anticipate they will not succeed in cracking down on paid seeding, it shares the problems with taking down individual torrent swarms, and only adds to their current costs.

It's possible that this could alter the torrent culture, but there's a complicated co-dependence between both technologies here. I don't think the torrent community would tolerate mass exodus to paid seeding overnight, they've been used to the ad-funded model for too long. But with the right price incentives and a disruption to the supply chain (ripping "teams" are apparently taking an unmonetised risk at present), the alternative culture could grow.

Thought: what if you're seeding a copyrighted material.  Now your not just sharing your profiting from it.  What do?

my thoughts exactly. at first it was only a fruit of an idle mind, but then I started to think about what will happen when the internet money makers hears of this and starts to seed like crazy. this can be especially bad if the payouts vary by rarity/seeds. this could whip those stingy companies into a frenzy.

thoughts, everyone?

Sounds like a good idea to be honest, but this only gives you a "chance" to get paid, as there is no way to guarantee anyone is going to pay for downloading things at higher speeds through you, right?

Does this mean that content providers (i.e. Film or Music industry) could potentially sell their content directly via BitTorrent?

Correct but getting them to understand that is going to be the challenge.  These industries don't really like new things typically.

Better yet would be to combine this with something like popcorntime.io and get it on an STB and then your in business! Cheesy

I find this project very interesting. Great job!

Does this mean that content providers (i.e. Film or Music industry) could potentially sell their content directly via BitTorrent?

But... what happens when file is bought and someone else also seeds it? Does content provider again gets a cut?

Is there a way to prove file/content ownership and get a cut even after initial seeding?

That would be huge... i guess prices could go extremely low (less than a cent) and there would be very small incentive to download illegally...
