Back in July, EFF and Access launched a petition demanding that major US companies take a stand against surveillance. You were one of the thousands of people who signed that petition. With your help, we called on companies like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and AOL to stand up for their users around the world and call for an end to government mass surveillance.

The companies listened. A coalition comprised of AOL, Apple, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo! has created a website demanding limitations on state spying. Specifically, the coalition affirms that governments "should not undertake bulk data collection of Internet communications"–exactly what we've been demanding.

That's a huge shift for these companies, and you made it happen. By targeting big business, you showed them that you care about mass spying and that they should too.

Internet companies aren't the only ones joining the fight against mass surveillance. Over 500,0000 people have signed a petition calling for an end to bulk spying of the Internet. Politicians around the world have protested the monitoring of their citizens (and themselves). A proposed law in the US seeks to rein in some of the worst surveillance practices. And last month the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution by Brazil and Germany which upholds your global right to privacy online, launching an official UN investigation into mass surveillance.

This is a moment to celebrate, and we wouldn't be here without your help.

There's so much more to be done. Pushing meaningful reforms to surveillance policies worldwide will take a movement unlike anything we've seen before. With your help, we'll make 2014 the year the world fought back for digital freedom,
