hi
when launching a new ico on erc20
what is the first step when looking at exchange listing?
what is the most accepting exchange ?
You can find that info in every exchange and it won't be hard to compare them.
Easiest exchange to list erc20 token is etherdelta decentralized exchange, you need to give few information about your token and it will be listed. If it's not listed you can still add it yourself, it's very easy.

Unfortunately, exchanges have come to play their role in the money game. By rights, exchanges should do listing based on a number of criteria, including such things as code stability, development and wallet support. But these days, the big exchanges will ask for a payment for a certain period of listing, for new altcoins. I have read that some charge $50k just to list for 3 months. So if you have huge ICOs, they can very easily pay this for 1 year and you think, wow what a great coin.

Then they pump and dump for one year.

Etherdelta is listing ERC20 coins faster and take a look on what is happening on airdrop coins around they easily entered out on ED but I don't know how they do that maybe they build up some community first and so by that Etherdelta listed them up immediately. But if you want to be added on decent exchange well you need to pay them up for that so your coin will be listed and became a competitor alt on trading industry.

An exchange reviews carefully whether there is a purpose to add the token and what kind of token is it. Is this a shareholder token, US exchanges are out in this case because of their regulation in the country. But is this a payment token, then all exchanges may accept you depending on the audience of the token. HitBTC and EtherDelta are generally the exchanges, where you can trade with ERC20-Token. Not to mention, you have to pay for an exchange listing which might be the problem for popular ICOs like Iconomi.

It will be nice if we could have people share their experience as regard listing. How much did you pay and how fast were you listed. We can then compare and evaluate the best approach in getting your token listed based on the information gathered

In my view exchange listing is all about btc payment. If you have enough btc even bitttrex will list you without any delay. Another slow process in getting listed is when your community is huge and your coin is popular.

First of all before launching the token the team must have a clear goal and a roadmap with plan that is not longshot. People will be willing to invest in an ICO only if they are having some already developed model (a beta software for example). Also proper marketing on social media is imporant. An exchange will be willing to list it if the market capitalization is more than 1000USD in general.

Again being listed on those exchanges which have high trading volume allows large buy/sell orders thus making the coin more popular and get a higher rank on coinmarketcap

What do you mean by an "accepting" exchange? an exchange that accepts every shitcoin? Then I suggest Yobit and listing it there only will put a red flag on your project. You would definitely want one of the top exchanges to list your coin like Bittrex, Poloniex, HitBTC and others.
