Since science was made by God in His creation, and since mankind has only found out a smattering about science, science worshipers are really God worshipers, even though they don't know it.

From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism:
Quote
Buddhism /ˈbudɪzəm/[1][2] is a nontheistic religion[note 1][3] or philosophy (Sanskrit: dharma; Pali: धम्म dhamma) that encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices largely based on teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha, commonly known as the Buddha ("the awakened one").

Note the "Buddhism is a nontheistic religion..." part.

Religion in the past was used as an effective means to control large populations with a small group of people. Today, religion has taken a back seat to governments and police forces but its primary role now is to offer a conservative voice in political democracies.

Time for another occasional update almost ending up with a weekly pattern.

War on terror is sacred’: Orthodox Church praises Putin decision on Syria airstrikes

A senior cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church has said his church fully supports Moscow’s plan to render military aid to the Syrian government. He added representatives of other major religions would throw their weight behind the anti-terrorist effort.

“We have an inter-religious council in Russia and I can say with confidence – the coming statement of this body that unites Orthodox Christians, Muslims, Jews and Buddhists will support our state’s decision. The decision with which our state again assumes a special role in the Middle East and in particular in Syria,” Vsevolod Chaplin told reporters on Wednesday.

He also noted the decision not only fully complied with the norms of international law, but also mirrored the views of most Russian people.

“The active position of our country has always been connected with protection of the weak and oppressed, like the Middle East Christians who are now experiencing a real genocide. Russia’s role has always been in protecting peace and justice for all Mideast peoples.”

He stressed the main objective behind the operation in Syria was not in fulfilling some political or economic ambitions but in protecting the weak. “Terrorism is immoral and we need to protect those who are being driven from their lands by war,” Chaplin noted.

He also emphasized that terrorism was the most significant threat humanity is currently facing. “Whatever they are trying to justify terrorism with, it cannot be justified. Thus, any fight against terrorism is moral, we can even call it a holy fight,” Chaplin told reporters.

Pope’s Kim Davis meeting does not indicate support: Vatican

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/popes-kim-davis-meeting-does-not-indicate-support-vatican/article26631236/
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/10/the-vaticans-pr-war-over-kim-davis-and-the-pope/408637/

The Vatican on Friday distanced Pope Francis from Kim Davis, the focal point in the gay marriage debate in the U.S., saying she was one of dozens of people the pope greeted as he left Washington and that their encounter “should not be considered a form of support of her position.”

After days of confusion, the Vatican issued a statement Friday with its version of Francis’ Sept. 24 encounter with Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

...

“We wouldn’t expect the pope to weigh in on the particulars of any case,” Staver said Friday. “Rather, the meeting was a pastoral meeting to encourage Kim Davis in which Pope Francis thanked her for her courage and told her to ‘Stay strong,“’ Staver said in a statement. “His words and actions support the universal human right to conscientious objection.”

Ore. shooter left behind online portrait of a loner with a grudge against religion

As the horrific details of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., slowly came together on Thursday evening like a grisly jigsaw puzzle, one crucial piece remained missing.

A portrait of the shooter.

Mercer was mixed race, according to an Internet dating profile that appeared to come from him, yet his e-mail address referenced an iron cross, a symbol often associated with Nazis. He described himself as a “lover,” but posed with guns and posted photos glorifying violence.

...

And for reasons unknown, he apparently bore a deadly grudge against organized religion.

“Not Religious, Not Religious, but Spiritual” he wrote on one dating Web site, also listing membership in a group called “Doesn’t Like Organized Religion.”

On Thursday morning, those two aspects of his personality apparently drove Mercer to go on a rampage, shooting at least 16 people at Umpqua Community College, killing nine and injuring seven.

According to survivors, Mercer asked his hostages if they were Christians.

“The shooter was lining people up and asking if they were Christian. If they said yes, then they were shot in the head. If they said no or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs,” a witness said in a text message to the Roseburg Beacon News, according to its publisher.

Yet, the picture of Mercer remains murky.

“He appears to be an angry young man who was very filled with hate,” law enforcement officials told the New York Times.

Pope US Congress:

http://time.com/4048176/pope-francis-us-visit-congress-transcript/

Each son or daughter of a given country has a mission, a personal and social responsibility. Your own responsibility as members of Congress is to enable this country, by your legislative activity, to grow as a nation. You are the face of its people, their representatives. You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good, for this is the chief aim of all politics.

A political society endures when it seeks, as a vocation, to satisfy common needs by stimulating the growth of all its members, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability or risk. Legislative activity is always based on care for the people. To this you have been invited, called and convened by those who elected you.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/25/us-usa-boehner-idUSKCN0RP1GT20150925

On Thursday, Boehner, a Roman Catholic, realized a longtime goal of hosting Pope Francis for an address to Congress. As he stood with the pope to greet crowds on the Capitol's West front, he broke down in tears.

'TODAY'S THE DAY'

Pope Before the UN in New York

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/25/pope-francis-asserts-right-environment-un

Pontiff tells general assembly the environment should enjoy the same rights and protections as humanity and expresses concern for persecution of Christians

Without the United Nations’ efforts to protect peace and human rights, “mankind would not have been able to survive the unchecked use of its own possibilities”, Francis said.

But he said that international institutions needed to do more, counselling the UN against complacency, or what Francis dismissed as “idle chatter”.

The setting of laudable targets on its own was not enough to deal with the problems of the poor. “We need to ensure that our institutions are truly effective in the struggle against all these scourges,” the pope said.

"Living in a big city is not always easy," Francis told 18,000 people at the Garden, easily one of the most respectful crowds the arena has ever seen. "Yet big cities are a reminder of the hidden riches present in our world in the diversity of its cultures, traditions and historical experiences."

The pope — who says he hasn't watched TV in decades and doesn't know how to work a computer — even got a lesson in how to use a touch screen from fourth-grader Kayla Osborne, age 8.

The crowd in the gym included about 150 immigrants and refugees, some of them in the U.S. illegally.

In his remarks, Francis recalled the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, saying: "His dream was that many children like you could get an education. It is beautiful to have dreams and to be able to fight for them."

Science should be the only religion...

Much of the scientific method was pioneered first by Islamic scholars, and later by Christians. Hinduism has historically embraced reason and empiricism, holding that science brings legitimate, but incomplete knowledge of the world. Confucian thought has held different views of science over time. Most Buddhists today view science as complementary to their beliefs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relationship_between_religion_and_science

What makes us human is a belief in our existence while science is a tool towards that means, what matters most is recalling our humanity.

Everyone elses opinions and beliefs should be respected. Can't accept them? Get over it. It's bot like you could do something with it.

Well, is it really the opinions and beliefs of other people that should be respected? Or is it the other people that should be respected simply because they are people?

Smiley

Well, we all know that people should be respected in his own and well, all people has their own opinions, some people just need not to give a fuzz about others.

Don't know what you mean.

Respect people because they are people.

If their opinion is opposite of yours, don't respect their opinion.

Don't be so quick to generalize. You entire post is a logical fallacy. Im right and your wrong seems to be your direction here.

I would also like to throw another article into the mix. It doesn't deal with religion but the same idea from a philosophical stand point. It is a good read, dealing with ethics and what not.

http://qz.com/496713/even-philosophers-cant-agree-on-how-we-should-help-refugees-or-whether-we-should/

Well, you may be right, but my comment was supposed to be as intransigent as religion is. I was just referring to all that history taught to us about religion.
But yes you are right. Probably not the best comment ever, and I'll have to agree with you that it is indeed a fallacy!
I get your point when you say the thread doesn't deal with religion itself but with the idea seen from a philosophical approach. That's how we should evaluate religion!

A thread that will be occasionally updated with positive/contentious posts involving religion in society, purview is global and topics set to cover all religions as long as it interacts with politics and society, religion related topics are encouraged where it does not overlap with other threads.

In a sense a Highlights Board with discussion.

Examples:

Immigration and Religion

Religious groups want U.S. to accept 100,000 Syrian refugees
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/08/us-europe-migrants-usa-church-idUSKCN0R82MV20150908

Religious groups in the United States have urged the White House to step up its response to the Syrian refugee crisis, with one on Tuesday calling Washington's efforts so far "disappointing."

Church World Service, a global humanitarian organization that represents 37 Christian denominations, has called on the government to take in 100,000 Syrians over the next year, said Jen Smyers, who works on the group's immigration and refugee program.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, and the Jewish refugee assistance agency HIAS along with secular groups have also backed that figure.

Marriage and Religion

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis watches as same-sex couple gets marriage license
Couple receive marriage license on Monday in the office of the Rowan County clerk who was jailed over her refusal to issue such licenses

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/sep/14/kentucky-clerk-kim-davis-to-allow-marriage-licenses

"I don't want to have this conflict. I don't want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don't want to be a whipping post," Ms Davis said. "I am no hero. I'm just a person that's been transformed by the grace of God, who wants to work, be with my family. I just want to serve my neighbours quietly without violating my conscience."

Service/Outreach

A grassroots response to the Syrian refugee crisis is growing in communities across Canada, combining the refugee sponsorship know-how of churches with the contacts and cultural knowledge within Arab and Muslim communities.

In Alberta, the odd coupling involves Mennonites and Muslims. In Manitoba, a broad coalition includes Christian churches and Arab and Islamic groups. And in Ontario, partnerships are popping up everywhere, from big cities to a small village church.

Western governments are under pressure to do more to bring them to safety, including calls for Canada to admit more people through its government-assisted program. Instead of waiting, faith groups are leading the way – often working together for the first time to sponsor refugees through the private system.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/religious-groups-make-leaps-of-faith-to-support-syrian-refugees/article26322617/

"The way a government treats refugees is very instructive because it shows how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it."

Myanmar's religion laws a 'death knell' for peace Cardinal Bo speaks out against divisive legislation

In a written appeal Sept. 10, the cardinal condemned a package of legislation known as the race and religion laws. Rights groups and faith leaders fear the laws will be used to persecute religious minorities in the Buddhist-majority country.

"Parliament was coerced by a fringe group of religious elite to enact four black laws, virtually fragmenting the dream of a united Myanmar," the outspoken cardinal said in a strongly worded statement. "That these four bills were conceived not by the elected representatives of the Myanmar people, but by an extra-constitutional fringe element … is a dangerous portend for the fledgling democracy."

Myanmar President Thein Sein signed into law the last of the four divisive bills on Aug. 31. The restrictive legislation had been championed by hard-line Buddhist monks from a group known as Ma Ba Tha, or the Committee for the Protection of Race and Religion.
