It's so easy to say 'ditch it', and it will certainly cure a lot of ills. But it's not going to happen, so the best we can do is to try and bring out the positive side of it.

I have good friends who are deeply religious and exceptionally good people. If those were the only type we wouldn't have a problem, but sadly the amount of bigotry which goes with most religious people is frustrating.

Well not bad simply not appilicable for people.Religion wants from you to put your feelings in order to do only what is aprooved and permited by rules of relligion. What about don't devorce? Why? Nobody is going to marry with divorce on the mind in that moment but what if realises that you two can not live togeather, no love,no understanding,no  nothing...maybe you ll find that person different than you taught on begining. And what than? To stay and suffer? No way

If there is no religion in the world then people's minds would not be poisoned with nonsense and science would get us faster to a brighter future.

You can't divorce religion from people. The example of this is that much (maybe most) of science is religion, right along with atheism. Most of the science that is fact, and not religion, falls under engineering more than it does science.

Totally depends on the individual, it is better to believe in humanity rather then religion, as people who fights on religion are narrow minded people and they make us fight for their own benefits.

Ditching a religion is not like flipping back your lovely book novel. its a pro and contra events that can gaining so much attention throughout the world.
Religion established for recognize a difference in how people of world speak about it.
That's why there are balanced and stability in controlling the war of human right currently
Lost of religion is a choose but without it we seem lose all the way

Imagine a table. It has to be 4 standing legs. how if one of them missing? It may feel down strictly to the ground.

Same goes to life. There main things that must occur in life include Religion

but Opinion may seem relative since people welcomed-hearted are kindly hard to accept nowdays

Well I am generally happy that this thread generated some responses and they were all civil.  However, I found some dubious claims that should be clarified................

"Atheism is a religion, so ditch it."     I guess this poster assumed the OP (me) was an atheist.  I don't say anything about being an atheist.  And how can atheism be a religion?   Atheism merely states  that there is not sufficient evidence available to us to prove a god or gods exist.   Atheism has no "holy texts" or "inspired scripture."  There are no rituals or ceremonies.  There are no religious leaders, divine beings, or moral commandments that typically are the hallmarks of religious practice throughout the world.

"the 1st Amendment (means) that we are free to practice the true faith"   So the Christian religion as it was practiced or conceived by the founding fathers is the one "true faith?"   Well that's an exceptional claim.   I'm sure any nominal Hindu in India or Muslim in Jordan or Mormon in Salt Lake City would take issue with that.  It's pretty egocentric to believe that the religion you happened to be born into at this time in history is the ONE TRUE FAITH.   If you happened to be born to Muslim parents in Jordan instead, you almost certainly would not entertain that thought and would think it absurd.  I would read the 1st Amendment again, and see what it actually says about Christianity.  I would look at the authors of the 1st Amendment, and see what they actually thought Christianity meant to them at that time in history.   They would very vaguely resemble any certain modern day Christian denomination.   They were hardly even Christians at all.

"get 'science religion' out of our schools....etc etc."     Well see my first response above.  I don't know how anybody could call science "just another religion."   There is nothing in science taken on faith.  Everything in science is fact checked, tested, and scrutinized in detail.    Science has no ceremonies, rituals, holy days, scripture, afterlifes or underworlds, or magical deities that have to be "believed" on "faith."   Faith is a delusion.  Faith is pretending to know something you don't know.   We are adults living in 2016 on a planet with billions of people who need to get along.  How can this "faith" be nothing more than an impediment to our growth as a species ?    Ditch it.

Thank you for the discussion and thank you for keeping things civil in tone and meant with good will.   Peace

I've always interpreted the 1st Amendment to mean that we are free to practice the true faith without hindrance nor compelled to practice one of the myriad of religions that are false.  That may not be the way our Founding Fathers intended it, but that is how I try to tighten the ambiguity

In those days, Bible Christianity was the only true faith... at least as far as the people understood it back then. However, the founding fathers understood that religions could be many and different. They hoped the people would be able to instill Christianity in newcomers. Besides, if they regulated one religion, why not the rest? It would open the way to tyranny, and they wanted freedom for all.

OK. I'll ditch atheism if you let people live without religion if they choose to. Deal?

In the States, the 1st Amendment allows people to live with the religion of their choice. This means getting religion out of the schools so that kids are not influenced by what their parents consider false religion. Yet science theory (which is fictional) is often taught as fact in the schools, thereby making a State sponsored religion out of science, being taught in the schools. EQUAL TIME. Get the State sponsored, science religion out of the schools.

However, religion is strictly controlled, and the government will generally side with Buddhism over a minority religion

I think it's not a bad thing to have a religion.

And sometimes its law over church. We cant really get out of this idea even with theories on how we really came to exist.

i think religion is just classifying us on how we treat people and other living things.

Come on people, we should have outgrown that stuff hundreds of years ago...........let's give ourselves more credit.  Believe in yourselves and what can be accomplished in this life......not in imaginary gods from ancient texts that signify nothing.  And remember......criticizing religions and belief systems is not equivalent to racism/bigotry.   We can't help where we are born.....but we can be responsible for the bad ideas in our heads.
