In past I rented rigs (actually only hash) on nicehash.com and yes it was profitable with almost every coin because I had big hashrate and got a lot of blocks, but nowadays I don't know. I just stopped mining or renting hash, maybe will try again in future.

It can be more profitable then just mining at a pool.  From what I've seen you can get as 30% or more than what you'd get by just mining at a pool.  But, you have to factor in all the other things:  how much your electricity costs and other operating/maintenance costs there might be.

Is renting mining rigs profitable? I've done some research, and it seems that I can make up to 20% profit if I rent cheap rigs and mine profitable coin.

It obviously depends on the price.
