My mule don't like people laughing
This is the problem with nuclear power. Once they have a meltdown and the fissile material burns through the containment unit and enters the ground then you're basically fucked. There is no technology we have to remove that from the ground. It will continue to burn and sink deeper. Contaminating the ground water for 1000's of years. With Fukushima the ground water exits into the ocean at that site. So what's happening is the radiation from the 3 melted cores is spewing into the Pacific. The currents take this to the west coast of the US and Canada. This is why so many marine species are dying off that coast.

HELEN CALDICOTT: The Fukushima nuclear meltdown continues unabated

RECENT reporting of a huge radiation measurement at Unit 2 in the Fukushima Daichi reactor complex does not signify that there is a peak in radiation in the reactor building.

All that it indicates is that, for the first time, the Japanese have been able to measure the intense radiation given off by the molten fuel, as each previous attempt has led to failure because the radiation is so intense the robotic parts were functionally destroyed.

The radiation measurement was 530 sieverts, or 53,000 rems (Roentgen Equivalent for Man). The dose at which half an exposed population would die is 250 to 500 rems, so this is a massive measurement. It is quite likely had the robot been able to penetrate deeper into the inner cavern containing the molten corium, the measurement would have been much greater.

Nuclear engineer says Fukushima is "as close to hell as I can imagine...

Recent reports have indicated that the level of radiation at the disaster site is still unbelievably high, such that cleaning up the area is expected to take at least another forty years. Honestly, the word "disaster" hardly seems descriptive enough for the toll Fukushima has taken on the planet.

Former nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen doesn't beat around the bush when discussing the enormous catastrophe that is the Fukushima nuclear accident. In a late February interview with the BBC, Gundersen explained how things could potentially get worse as workers try to get closer to the nuclear reactors. Nuclear Investigator: Worry over underground explosions at Fukushima...

He wrote in 2009 that "there is a place for nuclear power in our energy future".), Feb 17, 2017 (emphasis added):

Here's why I am writing about this subject and why you should take me seriously. Back in 1979 I was hired by the White House to help investigate the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. My friend Robert Bishop, whom I consulted for this column, was the only American at Chernobyl.

I wrote… that the [Fukushima] accident was far worse than the public was being told and that it would take many decades — if ever — for the site to recover.

Well it's six years later and, if anything, the Fukushima situation is even worse. Far from being over, the nuclear meltdown is continuing, the public health nightmare increasing. Why aren't we reading about this everywhere?

Fukushima Nightmare is Far From Over ?" Radiation Levels Have Just Hit a Record High

On March 11, 2011, a huge tsunami slammed into Japan's northeast coast, which left more than 20,000 people dead or missing and caused the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima plant. It was the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.

Report: Hundreds of millions of Pacific salmon missing, presumed dead --

South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL), Mar 16, 2017 (emphasis added): The low salmon run size for the Yuba River appears to be part of another regional salmon collapse. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife point to preliminary data from the Sacramento River that indicates salmon runs have also dropped to record low levels. According to Dan Bacher's reporting, last year's salmon run on the Klamath River was a 38-year low… Gary Reedy, SYRCL's consulting salmon expert reports that "A new crash for the Central Valley Chinook salmon is not unexpected."…

The Oregonian, Mar 15, 2017: Worst Klamath chinook run on record forecast — The worst run forecast on record for the Klamath River's chinook salmon could close all salmon fishing along most of the Oregon Coast this summer…

Mendocino Beacon, Mar 16, 2017: Returns of spawning Klamath River fall Chinook are projected to be the lowest on record in 2017… "The salmon runs this year will present a challenge for ocean fishermen and managers throughout the West Coast," said Executive Director Chuck Tracy… "the low forecast for Klamath River fall Chinook is unprecedented"… "This year will be an exceptionally difficult year for ocean salmon fisheries, especially in Oregon and California"… said Council Chair Herb Pollard.
