We could make our own custom mod? Although I am no expert on SMF software but there could be a possible solution.
Yes, that's the perks of an open source software — particularly a forum software. I don't know if theymos did make a documentation of everything he made like what i mentioned (trust, merit, flag, etc.) for open source community to be forked, used and improved.

And yes, those are possible, but with a limited developer (theymos and PowerGlove) and demands from the community i don't think it will be developed too soon.

I think the demand will be there once implemented. It would even encourage problem solving in the dev community.

edit: there seems to be a mod for the SMF software: https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=4077
This mod is only available on smf forum version 2 above. This forum is still on 1.1XX version and knowing there are lots of custom modifications added on this forum like trust, flag, merit, more on security, i don't it will be easy just add it on here.

About the implementation, i don't think there will be enough trend of users who will use it, so this request will be probably be dumped by theymos just like those other requests.

Elegant math is exactly what this forum needs.

Currently an equation or a math tag isn't available on the forum like other tags (w.g quote, bold, list etc) as I like to call them (with regards html  Grin Grin). Having one by default on the forum would be nice. However depending on the device you are making use of , most common math symbols and expressions are available on the keyboard especially if you make use of a mobile phone.
In some cases where I really want to make mathematical expressions or probably solve a math problem on the forum, I just make use of a paper and pencil to solve the snap and upload.
Because in some cases when the mathematical expression is quite long, typing it out can be very stressful plus you could make some errors.

Would anyone else want to see a forum math function which turns your math into a latex version?

Here is a plugin example of what I am talking about: www.dokuwiki.org/doku.php?id=plugin:mathjax (not sure of the compatibility with Bitcointalk.)

Example:

[equation]
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
[/equation]

becomes:

a2 + b2 = c2
