Motivation for Webinar:
The last big change occurred in 1943 in the Bretton Woods agreement among nations of the world to build the post world war financial and monetary systems. Other significant development was establishment of International Monetary Fund and World Bank. According to Bretton woods agreement USA was to have a gold backed currency. However, in 1971 USA abandoned the Gold Standard. This led to not loss of interest in Gold as anticipated but a huge increase in Price of Gold. Perhaps this led to more than necessary mining of Gold. Increase of supply of former monetary metal does not lead to increase of prosperity. This shows the importance of having genuine individual concurrence of population for any new monetary system. One of the ways of obtaining individual level concurrence is more debate and discussion and possibly referendum. But the nature of referendum should include the weightage of wealth of Individuals.
Adding to the complexity is that the dominance of Dollar is sought to be challenged by China and European Union.
The financial and monetary system of the Nations around the world are changing beyond recognition, especially in COVID 19 Scenario. Digital payments around the world are catching up due to the inherent simplicity and convenience. Two main trends in the monetary system which have emerged is Crypto currencies and other is central bank issued digital currency. There are reports that Government is contemplating banning of crypto currency. The reason given is tax evasion. But the wealth of a nation is not based on amount of tax collected but on amount of new goods and services produced.
A webinar needs to be conducted to discuss and find a solution to the objective conflicting requirements of different sections of the population. The webinars will include different stakeholder with conflicting requirements and especially economists who can judge the unseen consequences of public policy.
