Sometimes I miss PM's sent to me just because the menu at the top is so small and I don't see the small "(1)" next to "MY MESSAGES". Don't want to be annoying, but is there some way we can make it easier to see notification of new messages?

Yes there is, you can check "Show a popup when you receive new messages?" on your pm profile page
