Am I way off base here?

No you are not.
If someone is doing a valuable service to the community, they will be *asked* if they wish to recieve donations. They wont even need to advertise an address.

Begging for bitcoins on the forum is scummy and cheap.

here's the ultimate idea to really hit it home...

do what op says with what the banning and all, and then add a feature that this forum can OPTIONALLY make a bitcoin address and put it into your address  and then you can withdraw from it or it can deliver to you right away!!

I didn't want to specifically put my address there, but i made it for someone to POTENTIALLY find it and instead help a group of folk in the same boat as me. lol..

Feel free to help poor student!

The full address doesn't match the firstbits address.  Confusing.

Two wallets on two computers. Maybe I could ditch other one.

What good is a wallet address in the signature when people virtually never actually send bitcoins to them?
Is that so?  I forget how this list ended up looking http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=24346.0 as I don't have the toolbar lol

Couldn't those addresses be used to receive from other sources, not just the forum?

Yeah, I don't have problems with it myself Smiley But I just mean that you're kind of contradicting your own point with not asking for donations.
Aw, as I said, I like that uniformity, so if everyone else is doing it, it goes against taking donations what so ever for your work, to not use systems already in place.  I don't have to agree with them or like them to use them Wink

I like a clean, easy to read, uniform forum is all.

So what's wrong with asking for donations for your work?

The line of what work is defined as is blurred.  I'm sure there would be better solutions to various signature issues than just a solid one thing, but this would take care of the side issue regarding donation asking and referral codes.  Allow the person who is doing whatever to decide if they want to donate for something.  It sucks, there is no one right way to handle the whole forums, but I still don't mind this idea lol  I like a clean, easy to read, uniform forum is all.  Maybe the true solution is to make the Bitcoin newgroup the official forum.

No more allowing of ANY asking for ANY donations.  Unless it is specifically asking to fund a certain venture, no more begging at all.  Instant ban.

I had a donation address in my sig for a day or so, then realized that it was a waste of space because a) I honesty never expect to get any funds that way, and b) I don't post with the intent of acquiring bitcoin. I also think that having an address is a passive way of begging. Would you have a signature on some other forum saying, "Find this helpful, donate to my pay pal account!"

It's not like you'd go on Tom's Hardware and expect to get people to "donate" for your hardware suggestions and tips when there are many others with the same information.

I think it's a good idea for people to have an address in their signature, however I don't think we should -enforce- it as a requirement. If people want to receive donations, either for a cause or in recognition of a great post, then having an address visible has obvious advantages. If people want to contribute to the Bitcoin conversation without tying it to an address, then that's their choice.

Consider it.

No more allowing of ANY asking for ANY donations.  Unless it is specifically asking to fund a certain venture, no more begging at all.  Instant ban.

Flip side to this, every person will have a unique address tied to them that if people like their posts, pop in a .001 btc or some shit.  Whatever.

Alternately, the forum could create a unique address for each new user, that way for everyone who does not want to give out their address, will have a public one tied to just the forum here Smiley

I forget why I initially thought of this, and there is obviously no need or rush for this what so ever, just a thought.   In the end I believe a change like this could clean up a decent percentage of all subforums and threads themselves.
