I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that it was a MultiBit wallet - the interface is familiar and I have private key password written down that refers to MultiBit.

About 2 years ago I lost a Multibit wallet when my Mac died. I assumed it had been lost forever but I have just found a file called "bitcoin-wallet-backup-2014-07-08" with no extension on another computer. However I cannot get it to restore as a wallet or a private key.

Any advice on what type of file this may be - it contains a string of about 100 characters - and how i can restore it?

I have installed Multibit 0.4.23 on a PC as 0.4.23 will not install on Mac (El Capitan). I also tried 0.5 on a Mac but that didn't work either.

Thanks!

I could be mistaking, but it kinda looks like the default backup filename for schildenbach's wallet...
