Any odds at all of disproving this? Kind of a stupid question to ask I know

ETA: Still at least 2 weeks to go... sorry

The posts from bidji29 imply you are trying to get pools, etc all up before the launch.  Those usually come after the launch, by third parties.  Are you trying to do too much yourself?  The most important things are the wallet, promotion and a smooth, fair launch, not all the supporting tools at once.

This is interesting. Is it enough if I watch only this thread, to catch the release announcement? Or do I need to watch somewhere else too?
Hi!
thank you all for your interest. This is what I was planning to do:
1) Create an announcement thread with the release date.
2) Post a link to the announcement thread in the logo contest thread (this one: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/annrfcric-logo-contest-riecoin-new-prime-numbers-pow-coin-contest-ended-288065)
3) tweet (@riecoin) a link to the announcement thread
4) put it in the website: riecoin.org
5) Announce in other forums too!

I don't want anyone to miss it, and since this thread is getting attention I'll post here too, but progress updates will be posted on the logo contest thread so may want to watch that one.

ETA: Still at least 2 weeks to go... sorry

Will the scientific "output" of this coin be zeroes of the zeta function?  Or something else related to the Riemann Hypothesis?

The coin will try to find number who doesn't follow the distribution predicted by the Rienman's equation.
I guess if you find only one, the theory is false.

But even if Riecoin doesn't find this number, all the "true" prime number will be stored and could be utilised in the future.

Following...

Bidji is there a post that he's updating directly?

No, he's too busy finishing the Coin apparently. He's not trying to promote his coin for the moment.

This is a joke, prove Riemann hypothesis with cryptocoin? If it were that easy, it would have been done long ago Grin

Actually, he is trying to disprove it.
He admits that everybody expects the hypothesis to be true so his PoW will probably never find a number that will disprove it, but at least it is doing something more productive than SHA256.
I'm following this coin and will certainly mine it when he releases.

Last ETA was end of October. But it was early this month.
Seems like he's finishing some details. I guess a couple of week at max

Riecoin will try to prove or disprove the Rienman Hypothesis, one of the Millennium Prize Problems. A correct solution to any of the problems results in a US $1,000,000 prize !

The guy who is creating the coin, Gatra, is not very public for the moment. He only did a little logo contest for his coin. That's where I asked him some question.

When i ask him about the scientific value of his Proof-of-Work :

Scientific value is hard to judge a priori, we will be gathering evidence for or against the Riemann hypothesis (which has a prize of 1M USD if you can prove or disprove it).

The PoW might generate groundbreaking results, or may be as pointless as hashing, most likely something in between: we'll create a repository of numbers that some mathematicians may consult for reference.
It's very unlikely that we win the million dollars because the hypothesis is considered to be true and we are not explicitly evaluating the zeta function, but we are looking for numbers that will (or won't, that's the point) follow the distribution derived from Riemann's equations.

But if someone makes FPGAs/ASICs for finding prime numbers I'm sure that would be a big help for mathematicians in general. Even if it only helps for generating interest in math, I already consider it a win: we are proving that not only it's possible to make a distributed computing network more powerful than the largest supercomputers, but we would also prove that we can use it for something other than hashes. That surely must be of some "scientific value".

About the parameter:

I'll do a fair launch without premine or instamine

General parameters are like LTC: supply is 4x BTC, targeted at 2.5mins between blocks, reward starts at 50RIC.
Diff adjusts every 1008 blocks, but taking into the equation the last 2016 blocks (similar to BTC, but intervals are shorter and overlap). However I'm not 100% sure about this, I might change it to retarget more often.

He seems very different from all those Shitclone maker. I asked him about his background :

This is my first cryptocurrency. I'm a computer scientist. I work as a software engineer and I've been working on embedded systems development (C, C++ and some ASMs) for 13 years.

Finally, He posted an update about his advancement :

Updates:

- I'm satisifed with the optimized version of the new cpuminer. It's a fork of pooler's cpu-miner (minerd), and it will be released with sources and windows binaries at launch time.

- Everything works on linux, but the windows -qt wallet is very unstable. Maybe because I'm compiling with mingw natively, which is not supported by bitcoin. I've given up on that and I'll try to cross-compile for win32 from linux.

- I've been writing text for the web site explaining the new proof of work. I'll follow Sunny King's example and release that data 2 days before launch in order to avoid copycats.

- Now that I'm done with the cpuminer, I'm back to the struggle of setting up dnsseed and bind

There are a lot of things involved in doing this right. Most developers don't do it, but I want to do it right. Today I generated new alert keys. Many coins out there don't care about this and just launch with other coin's alert keys and without dnsseeds...

I don't know where this is going, but I will follow Smiley
