They are usually unrealistic, you can never know what might happen in a month or two. I'm writing white paper and I included roadmap but only things I know I can do and I separated marketing and technical part

I don't think there will be any problem in creating a roadmap for the ICO. Its a pictorial representation of the activites
which is going to happen after the ICO and every investor has the right to know that what are you going to do with his invested money.
No one will invest in a ICO where there is no roadmap. Roadmap is basically project planning.
Just tell me whether you will invest in a project who doesn't have any planning .

Are roadmaps a necessary component of an ico's whitepaper? is it that important that without it people wouldn't be encouraged to participate?
Its important for investor, to know how its will be. But, sometimes the roadmap different with what happend next so yeah the roadmap only plan, and plan will happend or not its depend on the situation.
I have seen the roadmap of Mona.co and DeepOnion, its very interesting, its like attract me to invest in there.
So roadmap is important, but not really. Bitcoin without roadmap can succes and reach the moon now  Grin .

Think bit... will u invest in a project if u dnt know a time frame of paying back. I ll never invest. Roadmap helps to get decision about ICOs also. Even a roadmap release in a project, will effect the coin price also.

Yes!!! I would never buy into something that I had no idea where it was going -- it almost holds the ICO accountable for what they raise by having some sort of plan in place

They're very important if you want to create some level of trust in the future for people who choose to invest.
Roadmaps give you some form of accountability and lets people see how much progress you've made.

If you don't have a roadmap, you can just keep postponing new features etc. while people have no idea if the project is on the right track or not.

The only reason I can think of why you don't want one is that you don't want to be held accountable for failing to meet your goals in time.

Yes in my opinion is important. I think that the roadmap could be in the website and not only in the whitepaper because has some important information about the future progress of the project
