So I ended up buying a usb to ethernet device and Linux stopped crashing on me. So it must be an issue with the native hardware. Seems to be fine now. Thanks for everyone's help
Try using an older version of the Kernel then.
When I searched for "Toshiba C655d-S5200 ubuntu ethernet" on Google, I got hits from 2011 and 2012. Back then, they recommended a kernel upgrade, or manually installing drivers for the Realtek chipset.This should give you the chipset number:

I suggest to start your search from the chipset number: search Google for example for "RTL8188CE ubuntu freezes", see if something useful pops up. 
I have tried Ubuntu 16.04, 17.10.1 and Mint 18 Mate (32 and 64 bit). Everything works fine on wifi. Maybe it's a kernel issue?
Try using an older version of the Kernel then. All those that you've tried are Debian based now, can you try a RPM based one such as Fedora?

From my research it seems like Ethernet isn't tested as much as wifi. This is the only time I have ever really needed Ethernet to work and of course it doesn't.

I don't see how this fits exactly into Bitcoin Technical Support. This is just general IT support. This looks like either a driver or hardware issue.
Have you tried other Linux distributions? Try Linux Mint and let us know what happens.

Does it have the same problem when you boot Ubuntu from the installation CD, or just after installation?
No I don't think that is it. That issue is because Linux is being booted along side windows. I got rid of windows.
When I run ifconfig -a everything looks correct. I even have internet for maybe 3 mins before everything freezes and I have to power cycle. Just wish I could figure out why it is hanging.

I have a Toshiba C655d-S5200 which I believe has AMD chipset. I am trying to run Bitcoin Core on either Ubuntu 16.04 or 17.10.1. I think my hardware is too slow for 17.10 but if I'm using WiFi it doesn't freeze.
As soon as I turn off WiFi and connect the Ethernet wire and open anything at all it freezes. No mouse or keyboard input. Have to power cycle to reset.

When I did ifconfig it said it wasn't installed. I installed it and then it said eth0 doesn't exist.
I have also tried to reserve an IP and when I go into settings it shows under dchp that it is using the reserved ip but it freezes either way.
Can someone please help me figure this out? I really need to run Bitcoin Core on Ethernet and not wifi.
