Good thing Bitcoin doesn't have to exist solely within Russia's borders. Is anyone from Russia on this forum? I'd love to get their perspective on their governments censorship of the Bitcoin project.

Russia is heading back to totalitarizm. Its obvious now. So i think they will forbid everything that represent freedom. Including bitcoin. It's not a big problem for a bitcoin community though. But if China also will do this, then it's going to be a problem.

I think Bitcoin could be a good thing for Russia but apparently Miedwiediew and Putin think otherwise.

Russia is currently facing a lot of issues, due to the price decline in oil and the devaluation of ruble. The Western sanctions are also having its effect on the local economy. The Russian government is afraid that Bitcoin can accelerate the capital flight (already going at $150 billion a year), and further devalue the ruble.

Also the statement of Miedwiediew: "The Internet must be free" and then "Secondly, it should be regulated by a set of rules[...]" is showing how every government is working, they try to convince they are supporting the ideas of free media and free flow of information but on the other hand they want to control what information can be sent through those "free media".

Despite the recent court ruling that overturned a previous decision to block access to at least five Bitcoin websites, Russia’s supervision agency has blacklisted one of the country’s most popular Bitcoin-related websites.

On May 27, Russia’s Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications (Roskomnadzor) effectively blocked access to one of Russia’s most popular Bitcoin news websites, BitNovosti.com. When attempting to access the domain within the country, users are instead met with the following message from the authorities:

“This site has been blocked by order of the government of Russia. You can read more about Russia’s internet censorship law here. A list of sites currently censored by the Russian government can be found here and here.”
