Who sayed any thing about more air flow?
There is less air folw that the standard fan. So that story about you sensor is bla.

So what to do when you have less air flow and you want more cooling..... Huh Huh
Increase the cooling surface  Grin Grin


Im with Phil on this one..... Top work, I don't have a S5 so i can't toy with the idea but now u have me thinking about other alternative cooling solutions...

What temp data you need? So i don't have the standard data. But i think it's about the same temp. Just not that noisy. I can tell you that the bottum sink is getting warm. So in my eyes it is doing his job. And it's like 10 min. of work. Drill out the outer holes off the blok. Stick some legges in. (M4) And the S5 will fit execly!

Just to be sure I understand, the heatsink at the bottom do really help to cold the 2 others heatsink??
If so, My S1 will get ripe off soon  Tongue

May be you also need a fan or two screwed to that bottom heatsink.  Cheesy

What degree difference does it seem to make having that on them?   Also you might look into the 3d and other mods to close the top of your going to that much work on bottom.

closing the top of s-5's is a bad idea.

closing the bottom is a good idea.

at least my tests have shown me that:

  a closed bottom helps and a closed top and bottom does not help.


I wanted to send him one of my fans since it is a large fan and would generate more air across the bottom heatsink he attached.

My guess is the only improvement to his idea is getting some air on that bottom heat sink.  For air cooling my guess is his idea of that bottom heatsink is really good.

Have you tested the 3d set or what did you test to close it? Did you test a vertical setup?   I think they also have been putting them vertical with the 3d ones which would make a big difference on heat direction with a vertical orientation.  

I would love to see some of your testing if you don't mind posting Smiley .

I did 1 unit vertical and decided to not document it since I knew I would not run  a lot of s-5's.

I found on a push pull setup air leaks at the bottom and the top of the unit.

but the top air leak does 2 things it runs air directly at the temp sensors and at the controller.

if you fully cover an s-5 and use push pull fans   the air that cools the controller/temp sensors is redirected out of the pull fan. so it does not work so good.

if you fully seal the bottom which I did with  a temp resistant rubber pad  no air leaks out the bottom.  so that air runs upwards and at the pull fan.

so the temp sensors get more air and the pull fan gets more air. thus it cools better.


this setup by the op looks really good maybe the best air cooled s-5 I have seen.

if he just had a little more fan action on that added heatsink it would be great.




You do understand that just because more air is running over the temp sensor does not mean its running "better" or "cooler."

Running air through the sides (opposite the heatsink) does absolutely nothing in cooling the actual ASIC chips, which is what we care about. All this does it lower the temp of the temp sensor, which just gives a lower non accurate temperature reading.

Closing the top and bottom is the best way to direct the maximum amount of airflow over the heatsinks, which is the only thing that cools the chips. This will also give a more accurate sensor reading as well.

If you cover the top  it absolutely  does what you say.  but it also raises the controllers temp.  and I did not want to do this.  

I was able to get the s-5's I had to run at freq 406 about 1320gh at 58c and 55db.

Ran them for 1 month and ended up getting rid of them.

I was not happy with my fully covered tests. Or my vertical tests.

 my delta push ,silverstone pull with a  sealed bottom was my best results.

As we know the heatsick of the S5 is flat on the gound. So i put some cooling past in between. Bottem sick is getting hot so it is doing his job.

And noise level. (heatsick vers.) 60 dB
The wrapped one. Was just a little les then normal. But still way to much...

What and how is that bottom heatsink in contact with?
If no contact, how would it help over covering the bottom with anything?

Hi guys,

Nice feed back. First it is a 140 mm fan. So it olso does the bottum sink.

Then i tested a closed one.

But that was not much better.

I olso did a hanging one and that runs hotter. And if this would be better Bitmain would make a different setup.


Then the differents in temp.......
I think it runs the same as the standard. Mabye a little cooler even. As the room temp can go up to 35 c and the miners are still running at 65 c at 400M

You need an old S1 for heatsink and a Noctua NF-A14 industrialPPC-3000 PWM, 140mm and a other 120mm fan.

So first you need to fix some legs. Like this.


Then put some cooling past on the bottum of your antminer. The heatsink part. And them place it on top of the sink with the laggs



Drill a hole just above antminersticker and use a stockfan bolt to place new fen.



On the other side i have a noiseblocker B12-P

I was not planning on posting this that's why it's a bit crappy. But maybe it can be to some use.
