Okay I contacted parallel miner. They told me they can’t duplicate the problem with the first S7 I sent back to them. I find that odd but who knows with these old s7’s. I ended up pulling one of my S9’s and swapped in the S7 to that psu and eithernet cable. The psu is a delta 2400w on 220v. Same problem. Drops chain 1. I don’t know what else could be the problem on my end. It’s not the psu or network. I’ve tried 600 frequency. Temps are in the low 60’s. I checked the 3 cables that go to the control board. They seem fine. I just want to know it’s not something on my end. 2 s7’s with exact same problem in a row at my place but work fine at their place seems like it would have to be on my end. What else is there?

I'd hate to bump an old thread but I've been dealing with this very same issue across 3 different S7s.

All 3 S7s have been voltage modded using sidehack's HEX files from the S7LN.  I ran these miners a lot about 2-3 years ago then stopped and shlef'd them ever since.  A few weeks ago i fired them up and it was like waking up zombies... they wouldn't even hash at all for the first few minutes.

I've tried multiple firmware types, 2fan and 1fan, same outcome.

I've tried clock speeds as low as 450m , same outcome.

The only common thing I have been able to find is that they need some heat in them to stabilize -- around 65-68 they hash OK for a while before the cards start to drop or reboot.

Sometimes the BBB is just unresponsive and needs a reboot... I've seen it where the BBB was hung but the cards looked like they were still hashing but weren't actually doing anything but wasting electricity.

Is there a way to test the power stage of the board to see if its failing?  I gave all of the hashboards a dusting but the problem still is happening... my next step is an alcohol bath on the upper corner of the boards.

Which leads me to this : https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.27080552

Added on external regulator modules?

The best I was able to get each these S7 hash boards to do is about 1TH/s for roughly 250w using 670/650mV HEX file for the PIC.  Anything less and the cards barely wake up, anything more and they just get too hot.

Follow up to my last post,  I was able to figure out why this was going on.

I cleaned the upper corners of the hash boards but they continued to have the issue turning on and off while mining. I reflashed the PIC with stock firmware and its been stable for 12+ hrs now,.. i was barely able to get 1hr out of the hash boards before.

I'm noticing that anything less than 680mV flash on the PIC will lead to these boards becoming very unstable.

I am just saying it is probably a good idea to temper your expectations of reliability and quality with used miners, they live hard lives. If parallel miner is willing to keep swapping I would obviously keep trying until I get a working one.

Ok I’ll see what they tell me.

So In other words just let it mine until it takes a crap completely some day.

Ok I tried 600. Lasted 18 mins and dropped chain 1 and 2 to 30 degs and 1.2 Th/s . This is ridiculous. These things are suppose to be tested before shipping. This is the second one that’s having this issue. It’s a different psu than the one I was using on the first S7.  I guess I’ll email parallel miner again and see what they say. Idk what else to do.

You should also keep in mind S7s are years old and have been ran hard every day of their life. As someone who has managed thousands of s7s I can tell you from experience we can test a machine for a week on the test bench with no problems, take it out and put it on the rack and boot it up with a failed board or other strange problems. That is just the nature of the equipment, and you cant blame someone selling used equipment for issues with this hardware because it is just naturally that spotty and inconsistent.

The only time I have seen s7s act this wild was when one of my techs tried to run a voltage modded s7 at full speed. Try running the whole system at 600 and see if it still acts the same.

I rebooted it. Was working fine again for 30mins and now chain 1 and 2 are down.

Should I drop the frequency to 675 from 700?

Well the frequency drop didn’t help. Can anybody read the log for me?

Ok thank you. That makes sense now. It still kept dropping boards. Maybe I’ll switch to a different psu and try it. Otherwise I have no idea. Maybe there is a malfunction in one of the boards and it causes an interruption every so often.

So I sent the S7 back to Parallel Miner for a replacement. I just received the new one today. 10 mins in and chain 1 drops to 30 degs and hash rate drops to 3.2TH Angry

Also Chain 2 has  one X in the row of chips. It goes back and forth between 0 and X.

The control boards may say s5+ but they are for the s7. the early model 54 chip boards had the controller with 6 fan plugs and 9 IO ports. The later models removed most of those parts for what I assume is cost savings.

The 45 chip boards run at a stock freq of 700 to achieve 4.7TH. If you run them at 575 will should only see around 3.8TH.

The 54 chip boards default frequency was 575 to get to the expected 4.7TH because it physically had more chips then later models.

Ok great thank you. Parallel Miner offered to send me a new control board if this one is bad. If I try it with the control board from my other s7 and it works fine then great. Otherwise I am sending the whole miner back in exchange for another one.

So I pulled the controller from my other s7 to try on this s7 and I noticed there was 9 plugs on the control board. It says s5+ right on the board. Were those control boards interchangeable to an s7?

So the 45 chip miner is running right now with the s5+ board I pulled from my other 54 chip s7. When I first plugged it in 2th is all it made it to and chain 1 went to all X’s.  It rebooted itself and is hashing now at 3.8-4 Th. All 0’s.  Could the hashrste be down because the frequency is at 575 and with other control board it was at 650?

The control board will work on all cards. Even the 54 chip firmware will run and hash with a 45 chip board, it will just show 9 x's on the hash board status because its looking for 54. And while I dont recommend it, you can even mix and match 45 and 54 chip boards on a single controller. I have done it on accident a few times.

Ok this time it just happened on chain2. I bought this from parallelminer early this month. They claim they go through all these and check them over. It has their little stickers on it they put in places they must check. I did send them an email since it’s technically under warranty for 30 days through them. I haven’t got a response back yet.

Can I pull the control board from my other S7 and try it in this one? Will it matter that one is the 45 chip and the other is the 54 chip?

The default frequency for all 45 chip boards is 700.

It sounds like the power stage of the board is failing, this can becaused by a number of things but the most likely cause in my experience is corrosion on the board. The s7s did not have the clear epoxy protecting its components like they do on the s9 and this causes corrosion and early failure. On the top left corner of the board (when looking at the side with the power components) you will see the parts that control voltage to the chains. These are right where the fan intake is and can be damaged very easily by condensation or dust buildup with static electricity. Give the board an alcohol bath and scrub that area clean with a toothbrush and see what happens.

One of the hash boards on my S7 either slows down or quits. I don’t know. Temps will run in the low 50’s on all 3 boards and then chain 3 with drop to 24 degrees and the hash rate will drop to 2.9 or so. It reboots automatically and starting working fine again. Then a short time later same thing. Chain 3 temp drops to 24. All 3 boards have 0’s.

APW3++ on 220v brand new. I just got this thing. The miner and the psu. It’s the 45 chip S7 set at 650mhz. When I first plugged it in. It ran for 30 mins and stopped hashing all together. The rate slowly went to zero and the fans slowed way down. I pulled the plug and powered it back up and it’s been running ever since other than the one board causing it to reboot all the time. The kernel log is blank too. Why is that?

Also this is a 4.73Th model and it has yet to see that. It bounces between 4.1 and 4.5Th Is this because the frequency is set at 650 instead of 700?

Just did it again. This time chain 1 is at 23deg and the hash rate dropped to 2.9 rebooted and is hashing again now.
