Samourai wallet is known for its showy moves. In this particular case they've removed your USD or whatever readout and all you'll be fed is the BTC one.

Their reasoning is that users need to step beyond thinking in fiat and embrace Bitcoin fully.

I think it's cool. I also think it's silly and not very practical. A wallet should facilitate the management of your money and that includes knowing what it's worth at a glance.

Are you turned on or genuinely sickened by the idea?
Im neither turned or or sickened. I kind f agree that we need to be thinking
in Satoshi's rather than FIAT but im not sure users in general are ready for
that. There is an obsession still with FIAT values.

Their Telegram channel is full of people who are also against the recent change. Samoraui support replies that fiat display support is not going back to their wallet even if many people demand it. I doubt that anyone has an APK file of an older version, what a shame.

Weird attitude. I'm all for nudging people along but to actively deny them something they still want seems a bit silly. They could at least retain it and make it something you have to seek out and opt in to.

A wallet should be a utility first, a pose second.

I don't see why their decision wasn't to just add a toggle to display countervalue and default it to "off". That way you can push your view but not remove features.

This step would be understandable if cryptocurrency prices were much less volatile. At this point, unfortunately, it is not a good move, it makes everyday use of the wallet difficult.

I doubt that anyone has an APK file of an older version, what a shame. It was really convenient for me to check how much USD equivalent in BTC I can spend on-the-go. I am going to continue using it since it's one of the best Android wallets I have used so far.

I can't find a setting in Google Play to switch this on/off (unreleased apps etc), so it's either buried in the desktop Google Play Store settings or perhaps it's only visible in certain markets. Huh
Because you don’t have to. Unreleased apps also show by default.

OP: Just search for ‘Samourai’ and it will show up. Or open the link in your desktop while logged in to your Google account and install it remotely.

That's understandable, but they should use BTC/satoshi as default unit and have option to enable fiat equivalent beside BTC/satoshi unit.
I agree. I'm all for choice... It should be a configurable option. They can always set it to off by default, but in my opinion, the user should be able to set this.

No one would use wallet if it's not on final version, too much risks involved. Besides it's not available on Google Play where most people download their wallet from.
But that's where I can see it... I can't find a setting in Google Play to switch this on/off (unreleased apps etc), so it's either buried in the desktop Google Play Store settings or perhaps it's only visible in certain markets. Huh

Did they change Samurai so that it shows more than 25 transactions? Last time I used it, it was impossible to see the full transaction history of a wallet...

That would be more important to me than seeing my balance in some arbitrary fiat amount.

so they just removed an arbitrary feature that some users may want and are hyping about it?! LOL. most bitcoin wallets don't even have that option and those that do have it, it is not a big feature really.
what happened was that they were probably making API calls to some exchange or maybe dumbly enough to some other third party like Coindesk or Coinmarketcap! and now they don't want to have that kind of API call, so that their wallet doesn't have that inside of it. in other words their "reasoning" is most probably bullshit.

Neither. I'm surprised people are talking about it at all. It's not daring or novel.

It's sort of adorable that Samourai thinks this will somehow affect the transition to BTC as a unit of account. More likely, they're just trying to draw attention to themselves. It's a gimmick meant to resonate with the "fiat money is collapsing" crowd.

Samourai should give people the option to enable or disable fiat metrics, don't blatantly cut it off.

I think they want to breed an army of Apple-style zombie fanatics to do their bidding.

There's taking a stance, and then there's degrading the user experience. A fiat balance might be 'cheating' but I do not wish to have my botty slapped for having one.

Everytime I spend my Bitcoin I always use my local exchanges prices to measure how much should I send rather than rely on my wallet's usd rates.
I simply use a mobile client that just asks me to scan a QR code and the amount and everything is set instantly. In my opinion this is an ultimate form of convenience instead of going through the hassle of manually setting figures.

I'm using the Electrum wallet which offers SegWit support as well, and it supports RBF (replace by fee). It allows you to manually select fiat sources as well, which in this case is Coindesk or BitcoinAverage. What more do we need?

The only downside is that the app doesn't have a sleek GUI and it takes like 10 seconds to open (nothing that can't be solved with an update), but I'm sticking to it with how I believe it's one of the more secure clients available.

It's nothing really special for me with how the satoshi client has never done anything with fiat.

I definitely appreciate the daring move, but these actions are more of a shock to all the mainstream users who don't care about anything other than preserving their fiat balance in the best possible way, and let the mainstream users account for the far majority of the participants here. In that regard, I don't think it's a good move at all.

People here are simple, if they don't like what wallet/service X offers, they switch to wallet/service Y with how many viable alternatives we have today. I'm certain that with enough user feedback, they will reverse their actions. It's all about supply and demand in the end, and the mainstream users are the demand you as wallet/service have to treat carefully. Once your reputation here has been dented, it's difficult to recover.

Building up reputation costs years, destroying it just a week or a month.

I like the change but i'm not turned on since I don't use their wallet maybe if they had a desktop version I might give them a try.

For me the converted balances isn't really necessary I won't mind if all wallets decides to remove the feature. It only becomes useful if you're using the same exchange or always check the price.

However, while making a transaction, people are looking to the equivalent in fiat so I'm not sure who will be using the wallet anymore.

Exactly. Any time I've spent bitcoin, it has been at a converted-from-fiat-price rather than at a fixed-bitcoin-price. If we reach the day where everyone is transacting in bitcoin, then sure, fiat value becomes obsolete, but the fact remains that the vast majority of us are converting our bitcoin to fiat at some stage.

There is trouble abrewing
i am curious to know whether anyone is currently even using Samurai wallet? i have heard the name many times, mostly because of SegWit but apart from that i have never heard anyone saying they use this wallet. for example if you check out the alternative clients board in the past 10 pages (i  didn't check more than 10) which is about 1 year there is only one topic!

I downloaded it out of curiosity and occasionally use it. It's not my fave but seems OK. It seems to have much more of a presence on Reddit than here for some reason.

I think in general they're more interested in hyping themselves and their 'edgy' viewpoint than making something that your dog could use.

yeah, that is also my conclusion.
in fact that is why i never bothered to check them out despite the fact that i have tried almost all the bitcoin wallets that have ever existed! they advertise a lot but it is mostly hot air.

wallets have been showing only BTC values since 2009.. nothing new.

what would be innovative is instead of a USD dominance. they actually calculated bitcoin to something else

imagine if all wallets measured up against lets say minimum wage.
yes i understand the variance per state/country.. but thats the whole point and the revolutionary part.

bitcoiners start messing with forex markets for profit causing fiat disruption
EG
if bitcoin users EVERYWHERE seen that they could buy btc at 900 minimum wage hours of their local currency.
then africans and asians would be able to buy more BTC without having to work thousands of hours like they do now based on USD prices
also americans will convert dollars to 3rd world countries fiat and then buy btc from those countries
thus moving the forex markets and changing the forex scales of dominance.

you know.. making btc cause real world finance disparity change and disruption while people buy btc

but i bet people will think that idea is a bit too much of a bold and revolutionary move and wont want to cause actual real world financial change. even it if means more profit or better pricing for all

It's actually interesting, just like the idea of having the donation amount in the forums the same even though the price increased over the years. However, while making a transaction, people are looking to the equivalent in fiat so I'm not sure who will be using the wallet anymore.
