You need a temperature gun and point it at the vrm..
They are pretty cheap though. I bought one for $12 at a store.

Don't think there is a software app that will measure the temperature

I have my 5850 running @ 960/300/1.174v/380Mhash/sec. VRM temps around 112C, which should be safe (120C borderline). Tried with 1.2v and VRM temps reached 145 and the card eventually throttled down. You might want to try my clocks (lower volts) Smiley.

Hi, I just used GPU-Z. I'm not sure if that is accurate however it seems it is for reference cards (tried it with non reference 5850 Xtreme, I also have one, and it just says 26C, doesn't change).

over clocking is not the problem for any card in my opinion. it is controlling the voltage to the card so you can increase
the clock speed just a tad bit more then usual.

I have two 5830s crossfired, and over clocked to 965, and mem clock to 340

they are both hashing at 280

With trix, it will control both if cross fire is enabled and the cable is used..

The are non ref sapphires

Some people report cross fire lowering hashs, but it seems to be fine for me when I can over clock both now, instead of just the first one

i wish there was an app that could control the voltage on 5xxx and 6xxx series cards all on the same motherboard.
i am just not in the mood to flash a bios and muck around like that at the moment. oh sure.. i unlocked the shaders
on my 6950s... but when it comes to 5830 and 5850s... it seems like there must be a way to do it with software on all cards but
i have not come across it yet. I have my 5830s running at 302-304 mh/s so there is not much else to squeeze out of them
and possibly cause them to be unstable. But the 5850 pisses me off next to my 6950s.  I have a 5850 running at 338-340 mh/s
and I know I can get more out of it. But every time i try a program to change its voltage I just end up screwing my 6950s
in some way.

Plus.. playing around costs money due to downtime. So sometimes trying to get that extra 25 mh/s aint worth it when
your box screws up in the middle of the night and is down for 8 hours.

if anyone has solid advice.. i am all ears. (besides flashing the bios). it seems if you have the right cards MSI afterburner is the
best tool. If that does not work you have trixx but that is one crappy program for multiple cards. AMD's tools seem lousy also.

Yup, right now i rolled back to 920/[email protected], its giving me 366mhash/s, 10mhash/s dont worth killing the VRMs, and the extra power used by the cards.

Without extra cooling on VRM you will destroy the card within weeks running 24/7 at 1.21 volts, regardless of core temperature.
The VRM temp will be around 145 celsius even at ~75c core temp visible on afterburner.

So if you do this, follow OP's advice and install extra fan on the voltage regulator.

yup, but i got 4 of them on a non-cf mb, TRIXX only works for the first card.

did you try SAPPHIRE TriXX ?

i have used it for changing voltage and memory with no issues, i have my machine stable at 900/300/1.18V , running for 24/7 and max temp is 67. getting it with 350 MHASH/SEC

I finally able to workaround those cards by RBE.

To successfully modified vcore and clock on bios you need to:
1) Save the bios to a file using GPU-Z
2) Open the file with the last version of RBE.
3) On "clock settings", go to "GPU Registers"
3) On "0x46" goes the vcore you want, i use "1.2100"
4) On "Clock Info 00", you can put the GPU/RAM frecuencys of you choice im using 950/350 for best results in my case. DONT change the voltaje setting... leave it at 1.088
5) Save and flash the bios.

I cant do anything about fan control, it does not accept any change by RBE, fan target seems to keep the card at 77°C.

I recomend to keep an eye on VRM temperatures. they seems to go up like hell, ive installed an extra fan to help keep them cooled.
