I recommend sdk 2.1 for 5870s.  I have four of them, two XFX, one ATI, and one Sapphire.  All run at 900/300 without a problem at stock voltage, averaging around 425 a piece.

To use sdk 2.1, install 11.12, reboot, then go into add/remove programs and select the ati catalyst one.  Custom uninstall the APP SDK, then install the 2.1 SDK on top of it.  I use the developer version, I found the link somewhere on the forums, but this might work for you as well:

http://developer.amd.com/sdks/AMDAPPSDK/downloads/pages/AMDAPPSDKDownloadArchive.aspx

That's with Phoenix.  I can't get that out of cgminer, it's in the upper 300s, but it will not break 400.  And they run hotter under cgminer than phoenix.

Also, I found phoenix 1.7.5 easier to use than 2.0.1.  But both give me the same results when properly configured.  Here are the settings I use for phoenix:

Code:
[cl:0:0]
autoconfigure = False #Automatically configure this device?
kernel = phatk2 #The kernel to use for the device
name = 5870_1 #The name to display the device as (default is device ID if not specified)
start_undetected = False #Do not start the kernel if the device is not present
disabled = False #Disable this device?
worksize = 256 #Work group size, tweaking this option may improve performance
vectors = True #Use unit2 vectors? (enable this or vectors4, not both)
vectors4 = False #Use uint4 vectors? (enable this or vectors, not both)
bfi_int = true #Use BFI_INT instruction on ATI VLIW GPUs?
goffset = True #Use OpenCL 1.1 global offset?
fastloop = false #Use fast internal loop? (ideal for low aggression)
aggression = 7 #Number of nonces to test per kernel execution (lower value = less desktop lag, higher value = higher hashrate)

That's from the .ini file for 2.0.x.  If you are using 1.7.5, not sure if it takes an ini file, I used command line parms that basically say the above.

Lastly, except to get slight lower m/h on windows 7 than I got on XP, because of the video overhead M$ introduced with vista that is in 7 as well.

Hi everyone !

I have bought a new sapphire 5870 and i tried to Mine bitcoin using latest CG miner 2.4.1 and i face some problem i cannot overclock my card to over 920mhz or else it will jam and my windows black screen blinking and then "windows driver stop responding and it has recovered"

So anyone help me to maximize my 5870 performance , i have MSI 5870 also it even worst cannot overclock over 900mhz

i have 5850 and 5830 and they dont have these issue but only GC 5870 thats need over 400+ mhz has these problem !

Here is my detail :

OS : window 7 ultimate 32bit (cracked version)

Graphic cards : sapphire 5870 1gb

Miner : CGminer : 2.4.1 (latest)

Ati driver : Catalyst Display Driver 11.9 ( last time i use 11.6 but i face some problem on Guiminer then i update to 11.9)

SDK driver : Sdk 2.3 download from here : http://www.bitcoinminer.com/post/3828447301/ati-stream-sdk-downloads ( and i want to use sdk 2.4 but cannot find download link)

My current CG miner setting : (default setting with no flag) cgminer -o http://pool:port -u username -p password --auto-fan --auto-gpu --gpu-engine 800-920 --gpu-memclock 300

Please anyone can help me !

I disagree. The 5870's I've gotten so far seem to be pretty happy with stock volts. One can churn along at 1025Mhz @ 1.125v (stock volts), one is good at 1000MHz @ 1.163v (also stock volts), and the 3rd one I have I haven't had a chance to run at stock volts, but it's a very good undervolted card running at 885Mhz @ 0.95v; it can likely be pushed around 1035+ @ stock volts seeing as my other 2 5870's max out at 815 and 755 respectively @ 0.95v.

I find cards are able to run about ~5% or more on the core without causing a driver reset if they are not the primary display card and no display is connected to it. But if you are stuck using it as a primary display, and you are using the computer at the same time, make sure to disable hardware acceleration for adobe flash (this includes almost all online videos such as youtube) because hardware accelerated flash puts the video card in UVD mode which has slower clock, usually something like 400 core and 900 memory.

Also found that my 5870's are really finicky on certain memory frequency ranges. You might want to avoid 210-270-ish and 380-450ish, but it could just be my cards that have this problem.

If you want to avoid 100% CPU bug, may I suggest 11.12 or 12.1 driver.

If you want to eek out that last bit of performance, use 2.1 SDK for your 5xxx cards. I heard there are CPU bugs that come from 2.3 SDK too (most people have been told to avoid 2.2 and 2.3 like the plague. 2.4 and 2.5 is fine, but I recommend only using those for your 6xxx cards if they aren't detected on 2.1 SDK. Obviously you don't have 6xxx cards so this shouldn't apply to you). It normally comes packaged with older drivers, or with a special developer kit, but this link http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9768004/ATIStreamSDK_dev.msi should just install whatever you need in order to mine on 2.1 SDK and nothing more. Can verify you have 2.1 after by opening GPU caps viewer > OpenCL tab > select "ATI Stream" from the upper right dropbox. If it's not listed exactly as  "ATI Stream" then it probably wasnt installed correctly.

Unfortunately thats really all the help I can give. I don't touch CGMiner. I use Phoenix 2, and I use either Sapphire Trixx to over/under clock/volt my cards, or I flash the BIOS with the core/memory/volts I want it to run at full performance level.

you're probably pushing it too far on the standard voltage. you'll probably need to raise the voltage of the card in order to get it stable, although you'll probably burn it out quicker on standard cooling
