I got powertune at +20 right now, i've set -20 as well and its not a huge variance in hash rate.

I've even got my hash rate to 1320+ mh/s, this is with 78F indoor room temp and only stock cooling, nothing additional.

-I've learned a few things too:

don't use 8 pin to 2 8 pin Y connectors...it puts strain on the power system as in the power supply cables will get warm.

use straight 8 pin to 8 pin connection, or only use one of the 8 pin to 8pin y connections per 8 pin power port.

The card + ssd+ motherboard + cpu needs about 520w to run a complete system.

My Coolermaster 500w would make the video card display a green light by one of the GPUs and it turned out it means the card lacks power.

After all of this I will keep the sapphire 7990, its a good card and it comes with $400 of games Smiley.  ROI will be 4-5 months at $120/BTC.

Ok guys, I'm closing the thread as dogie likes to act like an idiot and troll.

First off thanks for posting, I really appreciate that you took the time to share your results.

what is your powertune set to? +20?

actually if you could post setting info for cgminer or whatever you're using that would be awesome. Both scrypt and btc if you don't mind. I have a sapphire 7990 malta in the mail right now. hope to have two for xfire by the time Battlefield 4 comes out.

1)  The Malta overclocked will still hash as well, if not better or cooler than yours for less power.  375w OC still is better than 400-525W OC.

2)   You admit your system runs hot and you are using extra fans.  I am running stock cooler on card only.  I have no clue why you are trying to compare results if you are using aftermarket cooling.

3)  Now Litecoin mining.   I've said at least twice I barely tested mining with litecoin.  Its pretty sad that you try to attack me on something I barely even tested.

4)  375w does not imply power limited.  Sounds like you need to go back to school.

Why do you troll so much?    You've contributed false and completely useless information to the thread.

In fact I don't think you've even contributed any hard or even useful information.

Degens gonna degen.

i've hit 1400+ on ltc... but i have stability issues...it seems like mining ltc is a pain in the ass so i went back to btc.

I'll have my apology now please.

The malta is more efficient in space and power and hashes just as well as the powercolor 7990 1st generation.  It even seems the 7990 Sapphire runs cooler than a 3 slot 7990 first generation.

So it looks like you don't deserve an apology.   If anything my results show you are an idiot for stating false assumptions.  Good try Mr. Troll.

Bullshit. Its no more efficient in power, you keep saying it uses 375. My DOUBLE machine uses 400W a card from the wall.

Runs cooler? BULLSHIT. I have TWO cards in one machine, closed case running cooler than yours.

Oh, and hows that scypt hashing I said wouldn't be viable on a Malta 7990? Ah yes, not viable. Enjoy your shit $1100 cards.

1.  Last I checked My card using 375W versus your card using 400+w of power implies mine uses less power.  You might try using google to re-educate yourself.  It really does not take an electrical engineering degree to figure this one out dogie.

2.  Yep the sapphire 7990 seems to be running cool and that is with no additional cooling unlike your setup of several fans.

3.  I stated I barely tried scrypt mining; to clarify I am more interested in BTC mining at this point and have not maximized my scrypt results.

Dogie, why you try to troll so much?  You sound madbro.

1) 400W highly overclocked at higher hash rate, rather than your power limited cards. I have the choice, you don't. Thanks for the tip about Googling, I hadn't realised that's what it does. Not as if I've worked for Google....

2) So you're comparing 375W of heat generation in a system with 800W, lol. Ofc I need two exhaust fans on the top. OP cooling system there. Mine run cooler, yours are hot.

3)

Because you're power limited. Ha ha, ha, ha, ha. Victory is sweet. The hole in your pocket is mad, bro.

It does not really worth it, I'd rather get multiple cards and a sick motherboard.

Wish I could afford one of these, but I'll have to make do with a pair of 7950s for now. Sigh.

7950 is a very efficient way to go, unless you are short on pci-e slots.

I am only getting this for space conservation and maximizing my btc mining.  its not for mhash/$ efficiency as I plan on selling 2 of the 7990 maltas one day.

This is one thing that I find irritating..people saying oh your hardware should do this when they have never ever owned the hardware or even worked with it.

i am running 13.5 beta and the ram is at 100-500mhz  depending on what I am doing.   at 1200-1270+mh/s I am perfectly content with how many mega hash/second its doing.

please get the hardware before you try saying you are right because apparently your statements are false.
Furthermore, Tahiti chips benefits from 256 work-size more than 128.

considering its 2 x 7970 cores with 2048 shaders each (just binned higher), yes. I am right.

use the SDK from 13.1 drivers or higher, 2 threads per GPU (default), diablo kernel, set vectors to 1 (default), worksize to 128, and intensity to 11. should get better hashrate. Underclock memory significiantly (150ish) to save lots of power at the cost of very minimal hashrate losses, usually less than 1%

that mhash for 1100mhz is low. should be getting about 658 mhash per core or 1316 mhash across the whole card

and you are comparing this to what card a 7970?
gotta love it when people act like experts on the 7990 malta when they don't even have the real hardware.

mining 81c and 83c for both gpu core, hash rate is 1270mh/s
+4 volts @ 1100mhz each gpu...i can push it a bit higher.
only using stock cooling .

Ok so for shits and giggles I decided to buy and try out this card.

7990 reference Sapphire Malta....well...guess what  it comes with $400 of games and I've been able to tune it to 1320+ mh/s , stock cooling only.

Stock cooling temps are 79-85C  for each respective GPU.    ~375 watts for entire card (this is with it right next to a 7950 in crossfire)

Only stock cooling was used.  Memory was down-clocked.

Even though I've only tested for one day, I am confident I can push this card much higher in MH/s now that i've learned how to tweak it properly.
Additionally, if I add on supplemental  cooling I am certain I can push it even further.

No its not better than 2 good 7970s, but it takes up less space than 2 x 7970s.  This card would be good for those limited on power supplies or pci-express slots.
After everything I have tested so far, I believe the best cards to be 7870 Tahiti, 7950, 7970 based.   The 7990 is still great for gaming and hashing, but it has a significantly higher cost.
