I think that a nominal donation would be best, to someone who greatly benefitted the cause of bitcoin. That way, in press coverage, it does reinforce the idea of bitcoin as a real currency, one in which prizes can be paid out in.

I second this, it would be as easy as setting up a simple democratic poll, let people toss in nominations with reasons why, and then perhaps on an important occasion (like January 3rd, Genesis day) the winner(s) are announced for outstanding contribution to the Bitcoin World/Economy.

The big question is, do you want there to be an actual BTC reward or not?  If not then the winners can simply bask in great public fame (useful enough).  If there is a monetary reward, then the voting process has to be watertight and things can get complicated. You also have to deal with donations, how to manage them etc.

I've seem a number of people toss out the term "Satoshi Award" and that got me thinking.

Is there a group out there doing something of the like? Would people be interested in one being set up or petition for the BTC Foundation to look into it?
