The solution is the same for Amazon as it is for charities. BTC > PAYPAL/CC/BANK automation.

Good luck with that. Smiley

It seems pretty transparent to me: you can verify the Bitcoins were sent, you can see the amount they were cashed out for (and compare to historical price), and they post confirmation numbers so if you were so inclined you could probably call up the Human Society and tell them that you had a few people get together a donation and you'd just like to confirm the amount for it and give 'em the confirmation number.

I see it as a means to an end: instead of standing around with the typical libertarian circle-jerk of "private charity will take care of all" with no one actually doing anything... if, in a few years time Bitcoin's going strong and for example Medecines sans Frontiers has received quite a bit via this site and others, it may prompt them to accept them directly. In the meantime, some actual donations get made, rather than pure talk.

Great, thanks! The SQL is also fixed so the site should be error-free at this point.

Sorry about the late reply - I noticed that charities aren't showing up on the donation page if they don't have any donations. I'm trying to fix the SQL so they all are, but haven't figured it out yet. Thanks for pointing it out!

In good news, though, the front page now has a form to receive credit for your donations and has a drop down that does, in fact, have every charity.

I've been tempted to simply go buy some btc and donate them myself so I can get some USD donation records, but I think it'd be a little disingenuous to do so. It'll all come with due time.

It's a shame there's a huge chicken vs egg problem with bootstrapping the initial receipts, because I think once you have some receipts up from a few charities people might be a whole lot more giving.

I sent a teeny-tiny donation, figuring that if a bunch of people donated an inconsequential amount of money, they could absolve themselves that in the event it turns out you were taking everyone for a ride, no one got burned any great amount. So far though, it doesn't look like that's happening yet, the number of (even tiny, inconsequential) donations is ridiculously small.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that this whole exercise is simply going to show the folly of the Libertarian "charity can do it instead of government aid" position, in that I don't think the real world really works that way.

Oh and one more thing: Red Cross is on the front page, but not in the list of charities with addresses. Cheesy

It's going to depend a lot on whatever the exchange rate at the time is. The minimum for any charity is probably going to be 1 BTC, but if BTCs are trading for $4 at the time I'm not going to bother until it's a bit higher.

I would say the minimum is likely going to be whatever converts into $20 USD, since some charities have that as the minimum donation amount.

The policy is mostly to prevent someone from donating 0.00000001 BTC to a charity and then expecting me to donate a hundredth of a penny. It's also not feasible to have 10 charities with a couple dollars worth each and expect me to go donate $1 here or $3 there for what could eventually be dozens of charities.

nice idea!  :)

on your site you say:
Quote from: bitcoin-charity.com
Bitcoins donated towards charitable organizations will be periodically converted to USD and donated assuming a certain balance in the account has been reached.
What certain balance would that be? For example for Doctors without Borders?

Cross posting from newbie section since I'm free now:

I really wanted to do something philanthropic with bitcoins, so I started a site that will hopefully become reputable and become able to really raise some funds for charities! The goal is to be very transparent, keep public records of all donations, and allow people to see real world results from their donations.

It's over at http://www.bitcoin-charity.com/ if anyone wants to help it get started with a small donation, or provide comments and feedback. I'm working on making some simple PHP forms to dispense custom donation addresses so people can be listed and get cred for their donations.

We're up to 8 donations so far and I really think it's going to take off soon!

Also, if you have a favorite charity you'd like to be added, please let me know!
