We also saw 2 big problems. High amount of unconfirmed transactions and exchanges that couldn't handle the trafic.
both of these problems always exist. they have little to do wit the $20k and they are not specific to that high price alone.

In my opinion we never could handle 20k per bitcoin.
only because price went up more than 100% in less than a month and that is a bubble.

1.Can we see a price of 20k per bitcoin today? Without high amount of unconfirmed transactions and exchanges that can't handle the trafic.
if it goes to $20k today then there will be the same surge and both backlog and traffic to exchanges will increase so no we can't handle it. but if the same solid and slow rise continues the backlog and the traffic to exchanges will remain the same manageable lelvel.

2. Lightning, can everone use it, or is it too early yet?
you can use it and thousands of people are already using it. but it is early to seriously use it for important transactions.

3. How much of the network uses segwit? charts?

4. How many transactions/second can we see with todays segwit use? And full segwit use?
i think about 10% increase but not sure.

I would argue that the decline from 20K had little to do with the high amount of unconfirmed transactions, though it may have played a part.
As the run up to 20K happened the price of a transaction jumped because the price was moving so quickly and everyone was not unanimously bringing transaction fees down. This mean that people only willing to paying the same in fiat were being skipped for the people that were paying the same in satoshis.
The peak of transactions did happen at this time, and segwit had been being picked up but had not hit full swing.
Now a number of major exchanges and players are transacting segwit as it lowers the cost of business. Lightning network nodes are also becoming more common.

The drop from 20K is more attributable to the bottom falling out of a sense of euphoria and fomo as bitcoin was unable to breach 20K (a psychological resistance) causing a selloff, which caused a panic sell that rolled the price down further etc.

1. I think that 20K will be hit again in 2018 but hope that the move that takes btc there will not be as parabolic and destined for a massive sell off as last time (i can imagine that there may be a similar chain started if 20K is breached with enough momentum though). With a slower rise and increased use of segwit and lightning i dont see the same issues occurring even if transaction numbers increase to 2500/Block average.

2. My understanding is that anyone can set up a lightning node and there are lists available online of entities that are currently lightning enabled.

3. I havent had a look at the breakdown of the previous blocks but with a theoretical max of 12195 transactions per block (on my understanding which may be limited), and only 2108 transactions in the last block at time of writing i dont think that segwit is being used 100%.

4. 3.5 per second was the last block and 20 per second would be a full segwit (at smallest transaction size) block but that doesnt take into account how many could be broadcast on the lightning network.

Hello,

So we saw a high of about 20k per Bitcoin in december. We also saw 2 big problems. High amount of unconfirmed transactions and exchanges that couldn't handle the trafic. Then the bulltrend begun. In my opinion we never could handle 20k per bitcoin.

Today we have lightning and some support of segwit.

My questions is the following:

1.Can we see a price of 20k per bitcoin today? Without high amount of unconfirmed transactions and exchanges that can't handle the trafic.
2. Lightning, can everone use it, or is it too early yet?
3. How much of the network uses segwit? charts?
4. How many transactions/second can we see with todays segwit use? And full segwit use?
