Is there any way of getting in to take a look around? It's telling me something about account migration not being complete when I try to log in with my details.
Reset your pass or register a new account, the first one is recommended as opposed to the latter. The beta isn't supposed to be used extensively, hope you'll remember that when using

Saw this a while ago... Has anything been changed/improved?

They now have a beta you can try at https://beta.bitcointalk.org.

Hi, I have some questions regarding the new forum software.
Does the new forum get support for signatures? They are a big part of this community.
Will the forum be accessible through mobile devices? Would we get an option to use the current skin in the Epochtalk?
Do we get a "Tip" option in the forum?  Smiley

This thread is for screenshots from epochtalk.  Forum rule is not to post off topic replies.

There are better threads than this one to ask (or answer) questions.  Smiley

Hi, I have some questions regarding the new forum software.

Hi! I am not a dev but I will tell what I know.

Does the new forum get support for signatures? They are a big part of this community.

Will the forum be accessible through mobile devices?

Yes but I don't know if there is a mobile GUI.

Would we get an option to use the current skin in the Epochtalk?

I guess no.

Do we get a "Tip" option in the forum?  Smiley

No.

So the new forum will be called epochtalk ? Why change the name ?
The bitcointalk forum is nice and so good in itself and biggest of all it was chosen by Satoshi. Undecided
The Images show it to be really awesome and great . Cheesy
How long for it to come ?

Epochtalk is the name of the forum software (like SMF, phpBB, vBulletin). This forum name will not change, it'll still "Bitcointalk"

Ah! okay , that's a relief. I think currently it's SMF right? Any estimate when is it coming to effect?

Yes. We are using SMF currently. Epochtalk may be ready within a few months but the development is slower than expected. There is no need to be hurry though.

Well, It looks like a "Windows Phone 10" style, and seems there are still lots of thing to do, we're far away from seeing that comes.

Yes, one of those things is the the design. As theymos said:

but it 'appear's' that we need to install bitcointalk.org's forum software on OUR machines before we can login to bitcointalk.org, is this correct?

These are instructions to install the server software that will in the future run on bitcointalk.org. Forum users will not be required to install anything with the new software.

Note that the software is not yet feature-complete (in particular, the Web design is far from done), and the public repository doesn't contain everything already done.

PS: I really can't realize what is the real problem and so I don't know "how resolve it".

The website (with the screen shots) is down currently, but I have seen the screenshots before. IMO, they are just remaking Discourse. Not worth 1.5million dollars. They could just pay 100k to make all of the plugins Theymos needs.

You obviously need to read the post above yours. Smiley

Functionality looks the same as well. You can theme Discourse if thats what Theymos is worried about.

As it's been mentioned before, the current UI/UX is subject to change in the future. Plus the theme engine isn't in place yet as the focus is other functions first. Once Epochtalk does have the a theme engine, a theme will be created for Bitcointalk.

I've checked out the new forum, I have to say I'm extremely disappointed with the design/UI of it. If Theymos has any funds left I recommend he looks into having a professional design done, would cost as little as 10-30k for something solid and a redesign would greatly improve the experience.

[...]
 - examine a project to find things that aren't documented (example for here, loog at package.json to see the npm run scripts about database initiation)
etc...
[...]

You have to read the error message, for the first one it seems that the script your are calling don't exist, and if you look at your package.json file you will see that there isn't any "start" script.
There used to be one, but the readme has not been updated, this is the commit that remove the "start" script,
-> https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk/commit/2d24ead47f8efbd96773f0b0ae1f18d66e42eda7#diff-b9cfc7f2cdf78a7f4b91a753d10865a2

Seens that now you have to execute "npm start serve" to start the server.
for the second one you have to dig, maybe a simple dependancie missing or a error in the code, anyway I don't remerber if I needed to do someting about it and maybe there were changes in the code between the time I cloned the repository and today. Also this is about CSS so it won't be a problem to run the server, this will only inpact the CSS.
Hey, I can't install it and no problem thanks anyway for all the help. I will wait the official release of the new forum software (it seems I can't start the server).

Glad we paid millions of dollars for "new forum software" that's taking years to complete and doesn't even have basic features working... even though a tiny fraction of that money could have been spent at a real development house and had the project completed months ago.

Seems that you miss some dependancies, try cleaning up the node_modules folder and retry the "npm install" or maybe that's a npm related problem (old version, wrong configuration). I didn't remeber If I had warnings here.
There can also be some non-blocking dependancies (stuffs that are needed for some dev stuff but not require to run the software itself), if you still have some warning try to continue et you will see if your are blocked after.

Edit : I've just made a clone / npm install to verify, here's what I get, no blocking errors (only some warnings about depreciated version / on dev dependance missing) so there must be a problem with your node / npm install

Hey, I have tried but I didn't succeed in the installation of the epochtalk orum. I don't still understand what is the problem (maybe some dependencies).
Thanks anyway, I will wait a reply from kcud_dab.

In Epochtalk Github repo, "build | failing" is mentioned. So it maybe because of the Epochtalk not wrong with your side?

I do not know but I'm still trying to understand how the OP has installed the new forum software (without any problem). Maybe I should send a PM but I don't want to disturb him (I will wait a reply here).

Try this. Hope it works.

Code:
rm node_modules -r
npm config get prefix /usr/local/ $ sudo chown -R `whoami` /usr/local/
sudo npm install
sudo npm install npm -g
rm -rf $HOME/.npm
npm cache clean

Ubuntu should be easier.
BTW if you don't have any basic sysadmin / dev skills a tutorial won't really help, the instructions are already here on github and if you don't understand what you are doing you wion't be abble to do verry much.
What you need to know about before installing epochtalk on your own :
 - what is git, how to use it
 - what is node, how it works, what is npm
 - what is postgresql, how do I install it / configure it, knowledges about database
 - examine a project to find things that aren't documented (example for here, loog at package.json to see the npm run scripts about database initiation)
etc...

And sorry, to busy to make a youtube video (that will not really help you as I explained) but if some people are stuck at some point maybe I can help them

That's because your ssh public key isn't registered on github, you'il have to register it or git clone via https instead of ssh
Code:
git clone https://github.com/epochtalk/frontend.git
Can you please make a video on youtube (please if u have time sure )  Roll Eyes to teach us how to install the new forum from github ;
Or atleast explain if one windows or ubuntu is better for installing the script ;

Maybe something good to have is forum layout options for user to select what colour and theme they want to have that way everyone is happy then. And having a much more colour related to crypto and maybe icons and different style altogether. New forums new style new design new feel for a fresh start Smiley
I would really like this suggestion to be implemented as well. The white and orange isn't doing it for me, the colors just don't seem to fit together well. It does look like the software will bring a few improvements, such as the auto-preview when preparing a new post. I use the preview function all the time when making posts to make sure the formatting is correct, and if the new software will display it automatically that would be awesome. I think I have to agree with FattyMcButterpants though, I don't think that this new software looks like it's worth $1.5 million.

I think epochtalk should be blue instead of the current orange they have, because our current forum is blue, and it would be nice keeping the new forum blue IMO.

I respect your opinion but I honestly totally disagree with it .
this current Simple machines forum use the Default theme as far as I know , so you will find a lot of forums using it . Since this forum is going to be new and Bitcoin related I guess it should be Orange (bitcoin core icon) or yellow (like the coin) but with a lot of more Bitcoin related on the theme because now we see a lot and I mean a lot of white , and only some orange .

This is the reply for your question :

These are instructions to install the server software that will in the future run on bitcointalk.org. Forum users will not be required to install anything with the new software.

Note that the software is not yet feature-complete (in particular, the Web design is far from done), and the public repository doesn't contain everything already done.

How is this worth $1.5 million? It looks worse than SMF by a wide margin.

hmmm , it seem it worth 1.5 million dollars i were not agree with it , but I think now that the new forum
will be a perfect place for almost all the Bitcoiners  , this is the biggest bitcoin community and its
worth even more than the 1.5 million dollars , this will a place who related expert and new bitcoin users ,
Everyone will learn here new things , in the last months , I had zero knowledge about bitcoin , Now
i can explain what is bitcoin , and how it work , to my friends and parents , all thanks to this community  Cheesy .

The NewForum will not also stop at this point, it had more feature and as you saw they made a new board `New Forum software`
just for this community users to vote for what they want , and also moderators will manage the huge contain
faster and will found many other useful features .

I'm not part of the devs so not to me but this section is made for this ( https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/current-requirements-523070 )

We can do do like we do now. Post in Meta and also as Github issue.

No. There will be no more features added after it is released.

Wink Yeah, it'll work like it does now. You'll post in Meta with your request and I might add it (or have it added) if it's a good suggestion. Epochtalk will also exist as a separate software project that other sites can use, so you could probably also post an issue on github or something if your suggestion is relevant to more than just bitcointalk.org.

SO this going to be the new forums? is it likely to change and be implemented into current one and everything like our user details transfer over or is this just going to be fresh and restart of bitcointalk. Or is this just software that will be available for people to use?
This is a new forum engine that everybody will be abble to download / install (like SMF, phpBB, IP.Board etc..).
There is also an "importer" to import the data from an existing SMS 1.x install, it will be used when this forum will switch from SMF to this new engine (epochtalk).

So your datas here will be tranfered to the new database / forum that will replace this one, and if anyone want to run his own forum he will be abble to use epochtalk engine

That sure is going to take some doing if you going from ground up then. Will look forward to the new coming forums. No doubt will have many ideas for features to be installed. Who best to submit to. Am guessing yourself?

You can also open a thread here in the "new forum software" section and tell which feature you want to say, and maybe the Slickage team can add it. I will try to install it on localhost (today , if I have a little bit of time free).

From what I've read, all our user details will be migrated over, all data will be saved. This software will also be available for other forums to use.

The screenshots of the new design look pretty nice so far! It's a clean and modern design.

I am not qualified to know what the admins intend, but as I see it

Epochtalk is new forum software, like every other forum software with a difference.. it aint ready yet..

When it is they will migrate this site to it..

Then release it..

I'm sure we could get our hands on 'beta', but I'll just wait till it's complete, let them devs earn that 1.5 million..

You will need :
 - node / npm
 - foreman (available via gems)
 - postgresql (which accepts connections without password), maybe create the dev database before (that's what I did), create a database.json from example.database.json in the frontend folder

And follow instruction from https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk , where are you blocked during setup ?
Some tips :
 - "npm run build" -> to build to JS / CSS, as it is *not* done when running "npm run start"
 - "npm run db-recreate" -> to init the database
 - "npm run db-devseed" -> to init some data (a category and an user) and verify that the port is your local port (hard coded in "frontend/tests/seed/devseed.js" )
 - "epoch --seed" doesn't seem to work here, but it's optionnal
 - my default dev port was "5000", didn't know from where it came from and I overwrited it in "frontend/config.js"

I'm actually still lost, I know how to install web service's atc, I was taught IT security and server design, by Tinsley Lockart in washington dc, who came all the way here to teach all of 10 people, back in '98.. so installing aint the problem, but it 'appear's' that we need to install bitcointalk.org's forum software on OUR machines before we can login to bitcointalk.org, is this correct?

What if we're on a lappy without the software, using free bus wifi travelling halfway across the country, how to login?

We have to install the forum? I'll no be here much loger then lol, this is a HUGE security risk, for then people can see other's connection's, no?

It is not an obligation, if you want to "test" the new forum software then build the current github version on localhost or maybe better on a vps and try it. I think a lot of users *want*  see how it will look like (we have waited almost ~ 1 year).

Hi,

I just build the current available code to see what the new forum system (will ?) look like.

Here are some more screenshots :
->http://bitcoin-fr.io/tmp/epoch/ (edit : link updated)

Only things that seem to work is login, register (didn't manage to login in after with a new account, didn't dig into it), creation / edition of new topics / reply and profile updating.
Others features are not working / not present, I don't know if there is a private and more advanced repo elsewhere. What I built is the code from the public repo https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk at this date.

Edit :
Note that the software is not yet feature-complete (in particular, the Web design is far from done), and the public repository doesn't contain everything already done.
