Make sure to get some beefy PSUs! Those cards are north of 350W each, IIRC. Undervolt as much as you can. You will just about have to, if not for power than also for temps.
Just buy 3 of these, and run 2 GPUs off each PSU. A little overkill, but not too expensive considering you're looking at just under 5Mh/s.

B isn't even an option, so you'll have to go with A. The 5970 is a dual-gpu card, so each card shows up as two GPUs to the OS. You can't have 12 GPUs, as even in a 64-bit OS the drivers cap out at 8. Twin rigs with 3 each are fine, as long as your OS is 64-bit, as that's only 6 GPUs per rig.
TL;DR
5970 = Dual GPU card
32-bit OS = limited to 4 GPUs (or 2 dual-GPU cards)
64-bit OS = limited to 8 GPUs (or 4 dual-GPU cards)
So, the next question is whether:

They can, it is basically 2 x 5870's in one package.
I used to run lots of 5870's could push about 400 a card.
The only issue is they get very toasty, the hash per watt is quite a lot worse than a new card.
I would eat his arm off for that.

I'm being offered 6 of these for £60 each, with a couple more quid for shipping. I have to take the 6 if I buy. It's my cousin, so I know he's not a scam
