Im also getting this kind of problem maybe the site search engine is temporary unavailable because of the host doesn't have enough resources to accommodate the more data or simply it is some kind of a bug and the mods doesn't know yet. My suggestion is just to use google.com and search the topic that you want to know in bitcointalk jus type "site:bitcointalk.org and the topic you want to search" then some results will pop up about bitcointalk. The search engine before was working properly the admin should probably uodate it or did they prevent us from using it ?

If you want to search the entire forum, you can go to the search page or to the front page. The limitation I added is that you can either search all boards, or limit it to 1-5 boards. But you can't limit it to 10 boards, for example.
? This does not work.
Even at front or search page I see this 5 boards limitation.

And how do I search at google for bitcointalk? Is there a special spelling trick at google to only search for a specific website?

You can search via google either from the search section of the forum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search

(It'll be under google search)

or by prefacing your search terms with site:bitcointalk.org

The contextual search in the upper right searches the board you're on and all subboards. If this results in more than 5 boards, but less than all boards, then you get that error (recently-added for performance reasons).

Google's search engine is actually more accurate than the built in one.
I used the forum's search engine to look for mentions of my name in case there's a discussion I missed. Google is a little bit more difficult in that regard, where searching for my name (even sorting by date) does not retrieve all recent results I require - in fact sometimes it sends me results from way back - thus it puts a hindrance upon me.
The 5-board limit is a little annoying in that regard. I am able to manage because I only post in a few boards but as for others that may have done the same as I to check for replies, they may have been active in a variety of boards and threads.

I have been getting message after I search in the forum saying Select no more than 5 boards at a time when I try to to a search from the home page.
Can someone guide me in the right direction to be able to search again?

Thanks

Forum is already under heavy load from the users and it is constantly being ddos'ed by trolls. By using forum's own search engine, you add even more weight to the scale. Just use google like spoetnik said. And you know what? Google's search engine is actually more accurate than the built in one.

"Google search is recommended. It is often more accurate, and searches through the forum's own search engine are rate-limited. Note that Google does not search non-public sections (eg. Investigations)."
^This note is no lie.

I seen staff before say use Google instead.
It is easier on the server and works good.
You can also get cache topics that way.

I also made a search plug in for Firefox with grue's help.. Search at Mycroft for it.
It's a search provider not a plug in.. They call them different things depending on the browser.
It may have issues with Chrome but it's suppose to be for most browsers.
Anyway..
I always use Google myself to search here..
