Only older Tor client were DNS leaking.
As far as I know the application configured to use Tor proxy was leaking, not the Tor software itself.
You are right it was Firefox included with the Tor bundle that was leaking: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/new-tor-browser-bundles-security-release

Tor by itself can't leak any DNS request.

Just watch torchat, as your dns requests still go through normal axx..... So can be logged/archived and used at a later date against you.
TorChat doesn't use any DNS server since traffic doesn't leave the Tor network.

Tor use its own DNS resolver when it needs to reach a website on the clearnet. Only older Tor client were DNS leaking.

You are completely wrong! You dont understand how Tor and TorChat operates. TorChat does not need DNS at all because it uses hidden services and nothing else. Probably you have misread some article "OMFG some app still leaks direct DNS requests if used with Tor, using Tor is universally dangerous!" on crashdot or dickitt.

Encrypted and anonymous - TorChat is the best solution out there! Hackers love TorChat! Also it is possible to use Freenet and use various ways to send encrypted messages over Freenet, such as Frost. Pedophiles love children Frost!

Encrypted but not guaranteed anonymous - Pidgin with OTR plugin. Note that Pidgin can leak information even when used with Tor, ir needs to have leaks plugged in code.

Jitsi is IM and VoIP software that not only have OTR built-in but also have easy to use ZRTP implementation for voice traffic encryption. Superb alternative to Spype.

There probably are more solutions or normal software adapted to use with Tor and end to end encryption like PGP. Just be sure it is open source and have no backdoors for NSA to goatse you!

BTW, the Pidgin OTR plugin can be used with any instant messaging service, not only jabber.

Jabber with Pidgin and OTC plugin (Not 100% anonymous if you don't hide your IP) or TorChat.
I think you mean OTR-plugin Smiley You can use Pidgin with Tor: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/TorifyHOWTO/InstantMessaging
Corrected!
