I agree with you, I brought this up about a month ago here.

While self-moderation has the benefits Jet Cash mentioned, it is almost exclusively used to curate feedback and scam other users. I think one possible solution would be to restrict the self-moderation ability to only Members+, as this would at least stop the most flagrant abuse. Something also needs to be done about auto-buy links (selly, rocketr, etc.), these are just as much a plague in the Digital Goods section.

It a great idea, however I have suggested numerous times here to either not allow locked or self-moderated threads AT ALL in digital or limit to full member and above.  Each time I got shot down with "people should be able to take care of themselves" (or similar).

Terminated.
- Removing spam and thread hijacking posts.
Correct. Especially if you're tagging hundreds of shady people/scammers like myself and a few other DT members. Not a single thread of mine would be unaffected.

Maybe this option should be disallowed for lower ranks, but then again, they might still be affected by the above.

I've been meaning to post this for some time but I'm just now getting around to it. I've been successfully trading various things, mostly digital items, here for a little over 3 years and in that time I've found that one of the easiest to spot red flags for goods/digital goods, as well as probably most of the market place, is a self moderated thread. I am pretty sure that the vast majority of the self moderated topics in digital goods are scams. I used to call them out but the post gets deleted by the OP most of the time and sure enough OP ends up burning people. I've never liked when people post negs without proof so I stop at posting in their thread which normally gets deleted.

You make some good points, but I have noticed a few reasons for creating self-moderating threads.

- Changing the terms of the offer - it is handy to place this in the first post if there are a number of replies
- Closing the thread if the offer is no longer availble.
- Removing spam and thread hijacking posts.

An astute observation!  Not only that it is so easy to check all  the "crumbs" those scammers have posted in various alts that easily tie them together if one has the time to do that.  Past post history usually exposes most of the alts and the fake "trust" as there is always a pattern.  One moron used the same Skype across 20 alts.
