Given the fact that both MtGox and BitFloor are down at the moment, we don't really have a good way to determine a fair exchange rate.  Were you planning on waiting for the markets to open back up and settle on an exchange rate then, or did you have an exchange rate in mind that you were planning on using?

Ten hours ago, MtGox suspended trading at $124.90
They claim they'll be back online in two more hours, I have no idea how long it will take the market to settle down after that.

A few hours ago BitFloor came under a DDoS attack.  The last I saw there, trades were occurring at prices below $50, but they have so little market depth that it's difficult to know what that means.

EDIT: As of 2013-04-17 BitFloor has ceased all operations.

Because I've been doing some extensive reading on this and other forum sites and it looks like no exchange site has been properly functioning, well, at least from what I've read. I'd rather purchase from a trusted member of this forum then from a site that can't guarantee the success of my transaction. I don't care if Mt.Gox handles more than 70% of the exchanges if they can't deliver successfully at the moment I won't trust them with my money.

Just curious... May I ask why you don't use any of the exchanges available?

There are many ways to get bitcoins.  I am sure you can figure it out...

Perhaps look into BitFloor.com?  I believe they have multiple ways to transfer money to them (Cash Deposit into Bank of America Branch, Bank Wire, CapitalOne360 P2P transfer).

I know that I'm trustworthy, and I can provide you with some references from people who have engaged in larger transactions with me than you want so you can see that I'd have been better of stealing their money than yours.  In the end you have to make a decision that you can live with.


Have you considered putting your own ad up on LocalBitcoins.com to purchase bitcoins?  Perhaps someone in your area has bitcoins to sell, but hasn't created an ad.  They might contact you if they see yours.

How do we know we won't be scammed. Your choice of forum nick leads one to think you don't plan on sticking around to when you're not a newbitcoinqtuser.

Alternately, you can use escrow. The person you wish to trade with can send the 1BTC to the escrow agent, who will only release it to you when the bitcoin seller receives your unreversible funds, such as cash or USPS money order in the mail, or western union.

Btw how does that Postal dead drop service of yours work? In what situation would one need a service like that? I'm curious 

Yeah I actually didn't really care about the rep I got with this account due to the fact that I know very little to nothing about computers and therefore my contributions here would be futile. I came here primarily to learn about Bitcoin because the minute I started browsing this forum after creating it I realized the complexities of it. I know a lot more now than I did before and so I'm planning on abandoning this account (because I can't find a delete option) and creating a new one to help out any BTC user that are running their clients on Macs because I see that most advice here is for Windows and or Linux users. Also I want to get a new username because I feel I'm not as new to Bitcoin as before ha ha! Anyway, yes I did take your number of posts to the community as a reason to trust you but idk this would be my first BTC purchase ever and I just don't want to get f%*ked over you know? I did try LocalBitcons.com but the sellers were still selling there BTC at a high price even after Mt.Gox prices went down and on top of that they only sold large amounts of BTC no single sales. I was going to try BitInstant but I heard that they've been slow at the moment and so I didn't want to risk anything. Well I understand you not trusting me after reading my posts if go through them most of them are questions like I said I'm still trying to learn as much as I can. I see that BTC is capable of great things and I want to be a part of it. If there's anything I can do to prove I'm trustworthy and not a scammer just let me know I just want to buy 1BTC before they hit the 200's again.

Escrow is a possibility.  My reputation can also be taken into consideration.  I've got  over 2,400 posts in this community for over a year now.  I've engaged in trades with individuals here as well as LocalBitcoins.com where I have nothing but good reviews.  I'm also listed in the bitcoin-otc IRC channel's Web Of Trust.  You can decide if you think my reputation in this community is more valuable to me than the little bit I'd get from stealing your cash.


True.  This is one of the issues with transactions that are not instant.  If you have other options, you should definitely consider them.  Have you looked at LocalBitcoins.com?


I'm sure you would, but after a quick review of your less than 40 posts here I don't see anything that indicates to me that you value the reputation you've built up under this ID enough to keep you from simply starting over with a new ID.  There is a reputation disparity issue here.

This is why you use a trusted 3rd party, or Escrow.

You send the cash to the escrow, he sends the BTC to the escrow. You get the picture.

Trust is based on history, so we need trustworthy people to run escrow services and gather good reviews and who are happy to receive funds and exchange BTC. All for a fee of course.

How do I know that I won't be scammed though? Also, with the fluctuating price of BTC by the time my money gets to you 1BTC could be worth more or less and that would make paying for the BTC and the fee you speak of much cumbersome. I'd be much more comfortable you send me the BTC to my address and I'll mail you the cash at the current Mt.Gox price. As soon as I receive the BTC I'll mail the amount equal to the current Mt.Gox price, but of course that raises the issue of you having to trust me. Ugh, I wish this were easier!

It is.  Unfortunately the OP doesn't have any bitcoins.  So, how can I receive an irreversible secure transaction from them before I send an irreversible secure transaction to them?  I'll accept a U.S. Postal Money Order as well.

Wow!  Mail you the cash?  I thought bitcoin was a way to have secure transactions.

You can mail me the cash, and I'll send you the bitcoin when the cash arrives.  Exchange rate would be mtGox bid price (plus a reasonable fee) at the day and time that the cash arrives.
