I have just written this post about Bitcoin, with thoughts from this thread:

Bitcoin: a CryptoCurrency for a free Internet and a free society

Of course I will never do that again. Which is too bad, because we should have mutual trust and flexibility.

So you gave him the bitcoin before he paid you? isn't that a big no-no

OK, I have no more Bitcoin to sell. I have the cash I needed in paypal, and it has been interesting.

Summary: 4 buyers, I have sent Bitcoin to all, 3 have sent the money to me, one has not.

Since the buyer who did not send me the money said he was having some problems with Paypal, I am willing to believe that this was a technical problem and I hope he will send me the money today.

If not, what can I say. I think the Bitcoin economy may take off and have a huge impact. We are pioneers and we are making history here, but we should be honest with each others. Scams may take Bitcoin down, void its potential, and crash the value of our reserves to zero.

So you gave him the bitcoin before he paid you? isn't that a big no-no

I agree. I was perfectly happy to send my paypal first for our transaction, as he is taking almost all of the risk. If he didn't send it, I could just dispute (and rightfully so).

Trust has to start somewhere, And in my experience, the person who is trustworthy will usually be trusting and go first. PayPal has such a bad rap, I hope Bitcoins explode in popularity. And I can tell you from first hand experience, Many people are trusting, My site has gotten over 6000 hits in the last 2 days and people have drained my paypal reserve, Not one person asked me for any information about me at all. Just look around the forum, I have 1 positive feedback and have only been here a little while. But people had no problem sending me bitcoins at all. That kinda worries me, ALOT. I could just as easily been a scamer with a website, I hope some kind of website rating system comes up! and Bitcoin-OTC is to complicated, we need to find something better!

I bought 100 BC from Giulio, and it was a pleasure. We had a bit of a scare for a little bit, as the transaction didn't come across for about 30 minutes after he sent it, but all turned out well! I'm still buying, if anyone else is interested in selling (looks like prices have gone from 18.9 to 16.2 today, the first big drop I've seen in a long time... SELL SELL SELL! Wink)

Thanks to all those who replied. Yes, I still have Bitcoins to sell.

Two transactions so far. The first with mikewillz, good. The second with the viper, I sent the BTCs but did not receive the money yet. I hope it is just a delay.

I think Bitcoin has a huge potential as a P2P untraceable anonymous e-currency, if it really takes off and achieves critical mass. A problem is trust. I am sure there will be robust reputation systems, but in order to get there perhaps we should just trust each other more, which of course is risky.

Well I wanted to keep my BTCs but I kind of need some cash now. I am selling 200 BTC for USD via Paypal, bank wire transfer or cash delivery in NYC. So, who is the buyer? Or, please recommend a good exchange.

will buy some for paypal.  Been looking for someone to accept my paypal $ for Bitcoins.  I'm a very trustworthy long-time Poker player, easily google-able and positive ebay rating.

I have read many, many, posts stating the same fears with Paypal.  They seem like genuine concerns

The Transaction went great, and NO I will not reverse the payment whoever said that. What kind of jerk does that???!!!!! My Friend Guilio was very professional, and I will do more business with him today. He is a godsend. So for those speculators please stop it.

I was just pointing out what could, and has happened in the past.  Paypal makes it too easy for scammers to operate, and cannot be fully trusted as a funding source because of their pro-buyer policies.

Like I stated earlier, I had somebody defraud me by switching the guts of a laptop.  The damage they caused to the case while opening was obvious, yet Paypal (and its parent company eBay) sided with the buyer.

I was simply offering advise and a warning.

I encourage both of you to report your successful trade in the list of honest traders.  http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=484.0

Thanks for the advice tito13kfm,
We just skyped. We are going to transact in pieces to establish trust.
Well... The BTC economy will never really take off if we don't learn to trust each other a bit more. Of course there will be scams, but as you say, not everyone is a scammer and most people are honest.

Well.. 619 is a California area code so face to face is out of the question.

I would never sell BTC for paypal as it is too easily reversible.  I just lost $550 from a laptop sold on eBay after the user claimed it was damaged and shipped back a laptop after he switched out the motherboard.  Of course eBay and paypal sided with the buyer.. They always do.

Clearcoin with donate to charity if not claimed will offer some protection to the buyer.  The real problem is if a week or 3 later the buyer decides to make a claim.

This isn't a problem inherent with bitcoins though.  Any purchase can be disputed, anybody can be a con, and it's best to do business face to face when possible.  Unfortunately I have no real solution, just some warnings.

Over 1million BTC changed hands in the past 30 days.  So obviously not everybody is a scammer.

IANAL, but perhaps a contract signed with GPG would be a good first step.

I'm Interested. My email is [email protected] and my num is 619-241-3458. I have a paypal so it can be done immediaetly, but I would like a phone number so I know you are trust worthy. I have well over $500-$1000 to spend

Just answered via email and IM here. This is an interesting point: how do we verify each other's trustworthiness? We could be two scammers for what we know of each other. Advice anyone?
