I have no idea what this is. All I know is that we should stay away from unknown things. 99 percent of them are scam. This may be one of the rest, but I suggest you be careful.
I have no idea of this too but as for reading some valuable comments, I understood on how this is possible and happening. Read this quote;
They use it to save gas fees and save time. By doing this so called self-drop, the developer don't have to manuall add/send tokens to the participant. However, this can be abused. Eg: someone can use 10 address to claim the tokens.

IIRC some succesfull tokens use this method to distribute their tokens, such as SCC.

I think some airdrop uses that method. We get tokens but many don't reach the market. It can be said to be a scam

Yes, it is not necessary a scam
But Sometimes a dumb catch... (when a small amount of ETH is required)
A smart contract is configured to automatically send back Tokens, often dead coins...

Why do even an airdrop require such thing? strange.

They use it to save gas fees and save time. By doing this so called self-drop, the developer don't have to manuall add/send tokens to the participant. However, this can be abused. Eg: someone can use 10 address to claim the tokens.

Hello guys,
Lately I've been seeing some Airdrops on Twitter which ask you to send (0) Eth and i will receive certain amount of their tokens. So since i am new to the whole cryptocurrency world in general I am asking is it possible at all to do so.
If yes, please tell me how and the best way to do so.
Thanks in advance Shocked Roll Eyes

You can send very small fraction of ethereum but can't send 0 ethereum it will say invalid input.

If an airdrop is asking you to send small amount to receive your reward then it is scam don't waste your time on it.

no they arent scam   there are actually airdrops that will ask you to create a transaction first on their token address  . that purpose is to activate something ( i forget the exact term for this )  .  if im not mistaken they are called self refer airdrops  .

this kind of idea can also lead to scam because they will only use the term self refer airdrop in order to scam people  .

It is possible, send transaction and enter 0 ethereum and pay only transaction fee. If you need to send more than 0 ethereum it is not airdrop.
Can I ask you for which airdrop is this required and how many tokens will you receive?

Here is one example of these Airdops:- https://twitter.com/Ethrex_Token/status/1098963854028140544
