I've run a minecraft server, and even wrote some plugins in the early days though not recently.

I'd do it for a bounty.

You make a good point, I just worry about taxing the fun out of it. Especially since the play does involve real money.
For example, in Diablo 3 you can sell your gems and they get taxed 15%. Then if you want to move your funds to PayPal, another 15%. Which is good for the game, both gold and RMAH, but kills the motivation for players. Though, if balances are maintained internally and the only actual transactions that happen would be adding or removing funds, it would remove the transaction fee and a 5% tax on the sale of goods might not be a bad idea.

Fair enough, I don't have enough time to figure out this one either, but It could be a huge thing in the future. Imagine a virtual world like Minecraft or Eve or WOW that used BTC as their in game currency, that would be insanely huge. People would dedicated their lives to creating selling virtual goods on a scale of unimaginable proportions.

I thinking renting land from the server lord is also a good way to make money, except people might instead focus on creating objects to carry and sell and being mobile, for a government to work they need to get income from every possible source of economic play. WOW spends over $10,000 a day on servers and maintenance. Selling virtual land once might not be enough to create a sustainable economy because the real world machines need upgrading all the time. (Also people wont mind a tax knowing that it secures their world. No tax and one day the lights go out because no one is buying land (who buys the land off of you might resell the land limiting your profit once first sell of land is slowing down and the users are now making most of the profit on your server)

Very very interesting idea and something will come up in the next five year maybe, taking advantage of BTC and escapism, and they are going to get very very rich. (especially if they enable others to make a profit in this virtual world, a profit through creativity (making virtual items, etc))

My ideas and ambition > time^3...
Plus, I have no idea how to run / maintain a server, much less a MC server. Then I would have to worry about BTC security and all the in game transactions.

Def. not a project for me. I would however play the hell out of it!

On another note, you wouldnt even really need to tax transactions if you sell / rent the safe zone.

Its not a bad idea, a real minecraft economy based around BTC.

Maybe you should make this server? You can then be the tax man and use the tax to fund the server and make a proift. Smiley

A server with a central exchange so you can buy/sell materials with other users.
Grinders can make small amounts of bitcoins, others can spend them.

It would be awesome to be able to buy/rent/sell property in a safe zone as well. But hey, one step at a time.
