Hello srt4racerdave, most of the available pools reward you bitcoins according to your number of shares and some pools give slightly higher reward per share than others. Other than pay per share, pools like deepbit allows proportional means to earn bitcoins via mining.

Thank you for your quick reply. Next question, when pool mining, is your BTC reward calculated solely on the amount of work that I put into a block? Why are some blocks worth more then others to me even when I have less shares in them?

Yup it's correct

Yeah, pool send you info, solo doesn't since there is no need, it's solo.

That's fine with me - Once I understand more about this I am planning on constructing a much more efficient build. This is simply just a test until I feel confident enough I know what I'm doing. Just to confirm..this is correct.. http://imageshack.us/a/img35/8199/miningu.png   (sorry about dual monitor screen shot).

Also, I noticed when I did pool mining, the summery tab in guiminer would have new lines of information frequently. Under the solo miner, I haven't seen anything under summery. That is normal?

Edit - I am not doing this for the money. I don't need the money to get by, nor do I expect to get anything. I am doing this simply because I am interested in this concept. I have a few specific questions that I can not find answers to on this forum, or even google for that matter. If anyone that felt confident they could answer some questions for me had a few minutes to spare sometime today, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, SRTDave

Yes

Maybe in a year or two you will find a block. MMh... no wait, you won't, the next month ASIC will arrive and difficulty will skyrocket

I have just recently started mining. I have two rigs set up, one on Slushs' pool and the other going solo. I just want to be sure the solo miner is working. I created a solo password and account name in guiminer, and then launched my bitcoin client from server. I set up miners in the guiminer, selected solo and selected my two cards. I get a hash rate, difficulty( 1) and hashes. If I am picking up hashes, is it working?
