I could use some help understanding VPN.
If I setup a VPN connection does it stop all traffic attempting to go out unencrypted?
I don't see how a vpn would reroute traffic coming from non browser apps?

i think it's more to do with revealing he has the physical possession of a hardware wallet via his internet link. hackers can't do anything unless they turn up at his house with a wrench. hackers don't really do that very often.
I am wanting to take the plunge into hardware wallets soon however one thing is bugging me.
I obviously don't want anybody knowing I have a wallet in my safe at home
I understand you need to use a chrome extension with the ledger so that makes it impossible to use tor.
Does the ledger transmit any ip information when creating wallets?
If anyone could advise me on keeping the ledger anonymous that would be great

Electrum supports Ledger (https://ledger.groovehq.com/knowledge_base/topics/how-to-setup-electrum-nano-slash-nano-s), and it can connect over TOR (http://tornews.com/proxy-that-shit-electrum-a-thin-bitcoin-wallet-over-tor/).
Honestly I hate that you need an internet connection to use Trezor, it kind of defeats the point.

you can use a ledger with mycelium and electrum too. no need to go through the chrome app if you don't want to.
a vpn should work fine. there are also forks of chrome that are more secure and might still allow the use of apps. i've never looked into that part.

Does a VPN route all traffic though? Using TOR could cause leaks when using chrome as the chrome app may not be a simple tcp connection.
I've tried looking into apps for the pc and getting a non networked machine however I can't find any decent apps for ethereum. I'm wanting to use it for ether.

Im not sure because I have never used one. I would guess that they don't collect any information... but you never know, so use a VPN for that, better safe than sorry.I obviously don't want anybody knowing I have a wallet in my safe at home

Why not get Bitcoin Core and put your wallet.dat in some USB?
