Police said two suspects have been detained and third is at large
One person wounded in overnight shooting near same housing complex

A Texas Southern University student was killed and another person injured in a shooting that occurred at a university housing complex in Houston, police said on Friday.

The shooting was reported on Friday at around 11.30am local time at the apartment complex and the school was placed on lockdown, according to Houston police and university officials.

Houston police department spokeswoman Jodi Silva said that two suspects have been detained. A third suspect fled out of an apartment window and is still at large, she said.

The apartment complex where the shooting occurred is owned by the university and is on campus property, according to local media reports.

On Twitter, the university said that classes were canceled for the rest of the day. It is unclear if the university, serving about 9,700 students, is still on lockdown.

There had been an overnight shooting near the same housing complex, university police confirmed in a statement, which left one person wounded. Silva said officers are investigating whether the incidents are connected.

In August, two people were shot on the university’s campus, resulting in one fatality.

In response to the spate of shootings the university said in a statement: “The recent shooting incidents on our campus have been extremely difficult and troubling for our entire university community. In the wake of these incidents, our campus security and police department is increasing its presence.”

In June, Texas governor Greg Abbott signed into law a bill that allows gun owners to carry concealed handguns on college campuses.
