I am looking into buying btc and investing 50% of it into LTC & ETH but afraid that prices might sky rocket after Aug 1

A golden period to buy some alt coins as the market is extremely low. A good investment so far as bitcoin confirmed hard fork on Aug 1. So, convert your bitcoin into altcoins. However, Choice is yours, do what you like most!

I'd rather buy altcoins now. They are cheap at this time. Must be something to do with August 1 thing.

This is called FOMO, Fear Of Missing Out.

You aren't missing out int he long run if you already have some coins and are holding. You are missing out in the short run on temporary prices that flucate a lot.

It would do you good to not try invest in the shortterm, as it is very random, and good or bad news can really screw up prices for weeks.

Try for holding a year or two, or if you really believe in BTC, spend your BTC on actualy products/services to help keep the network going.

You must take a prediction, no one knows exactly what will happen, there are all the kinds of opinions. Some people migrating their funds to AltCoins, others investing hard on Bitcoin, others withdrawing BTC to fiat...

I personally endorse the opinion Bitcoin will increase its price a lot after August 1, especially after 1 month or so. I believe the improvement that is being done without HardFork will only make it becomes stronger than ever. I believe the BTC price in % will increase much more than any other AltCoin (that could increase its price a bit too). Trust Bitcoin, that is what I say...

For me, as a new trader and have a limited savings for investment, I think the best decision for me is to wait until hardfork update totally done. By that time it is more secure for me to make an investment.

But, if you are rich and willing to go for an investment, well, there's no harm in trying. Besides, any information that we get and read from forums are only speculations. Whatever happened on August 1st will be the reality.

But, it is more better to be safe until August 1st.  Grin

In my opinion, no, unless you have a lot of money to spare. August 1st could either be one of the best or the worst day in Bitcoin history.

You afraid that the price would sky rocketed after Aug 1? Then you should buy now if you think that the price will rise. Personally, it doesn't makes any difference if you are going to buy now or after Aug 1. The question is are you in for the long term?

right now the price is between 2700$ and 2900$, you missed a huge opportunity at 2000$.

Most of us has missed the boat when the price dip around ~$1900 a few weeks ago. You can easily made profit if you got it at that price and sell around $2900. Currently the price is pegged at $2600.

Only if the price is below $2000 else buying bitcoins above $2500-$2800 might incur a huge loss later when it can drop further. Investing in alts would be better as the currently ETH is low at 0.078-0.079 and can increase after August 1st as it was about 0.14 in June itself. Now it's almost half that price.

This is our old adage here. "Buy low, sell high". But the OP may have missed the opportunity to get bitcoin while the price is low. We don't know if the price will dip after Aug 1 though. It's still up to him/her to decide whether to get it now or after. So here's my advise, wait till the dust settles before buying anything.

The first thing to learn about bitcoin is that nobody knows something that you don't. You may get 100 answers to your questions about future price, but these are simply guesses you could have made. Only you can decide what a good price for you is.
I agree with RodeoX, nobody really knows. I would suggest you to buy a bit less before Aug 1, and buy some more after that, if the price goes down. But it's your decision, though.

August 1 even if doesn't happen nothing, major whales will try to push down the price to make people to sell the bitcoin in panic. So maybe it is wise to wait just right after August 1 to buy if this scenario happens. Normally today price has started to fall, and I think the more we get near August 1 the more the price will fall. In investments though everything can happen so be prepared for anything.

If you're afraid of it skyrocketing after August 1st, why not buy it now?

No one knows what will happen for sure.

Buy some in smaller chunks before and after Aug 1 to cost average.. it reduces the potential for a huge jump in value but reduces your risk. If you set up an automatic investment (like on Coinbase) then you can just let it ride.  Helps take the guesswork out of when to buy.

The thing is, no one knows what the price will be on certain dates. Your guess is just as good as ours.

Also, if you think that prices might sky rocket after august 1, then why not buy now? Are you gonna wait until it skyrockets before you purchase?
