Aren't alternative currencies supposed to be a test-bed for a whole range of ideas (even if some of them are crazy)?
Even if there was a lot of trouble with that subforum lately, I don't believe it should be closed.
Especially when users can hide any part of the forum they don't wish to participate in at will.

Let the chips fall where they may.
Bitcoin is still an experimental currency. Why would we want to suppress discussion of similar experiments?

Also there is an option to hide forums in the user options.  Just hide it and you won't see the forum, any thread, or any updates.  It is like it was removed.

Don't visit that subforum then?

This. I don't see a problem with that subforum anymore than "Politics & Society" or "Off-Topic." It has a purpose; people being legitimately abusive should be dealt with regardless of where they are posting.

Really, I don't see why "coin wars" have to exist at all. Do all alternate cryptocurrencies have to be scams? Don't the ideas behind some have merit? Isn't the very spirit of Bitcoin about open-source, innovation, competition, and taking things in new directions? Why would someone who supports Bitcoin possibly want to suppress that, unless for personal reasons, or in a misguided belief that the concept of alt coins is always wrong/bad/evil/whatever?

Better to contain posts in the appropriate place, and manage the abusive ones there, rather than having the threads containing those posts pop up in "Bitcoin Discussion" or "Development."

AFAIK, this subforum was created to do keep other subforums free from alt currency clutter.

So if it gets closed, it's assumed that the clutter would just go elsewhere.

sadly, this

If there's no subforum for this and there are some people with moderation rights, you can simply ban them for a few days for being off-topic. Permanently if this person continues to post something like that.

Which is a lot of work for mods.  Some people will simply register again and continue to slip alt-coin nonsense into other threads.

You could say the same thing about "off topic" forum.  It exists to keep the off topic BS there.

Keep it real
Moved this from the Alternate cryptocurrencies subforum, so some wording in the posts may be a little off.

Hi,

I'd like to ask the community, if this subforum should be closed, because I think that the discussions in this subforum are getting worse every day and it would be better for a new cryptocurrency to start somewhere else, since we didn't see any reasonable innovations in here. Also: I think a lot of us are NOT happy about the current situation on bitcointalk.org and this "coin war", because both Bitcoin users and users of alternative blockchains could do something useful instead of posting hateful comments.

Time to vote: 7 days.

P.S.: I hope the admins of bitcointalk.org close it, if the majority of us votes "Yes" .

I have read exactly 1 post from this subforum in the past month (this one).  In the past 6 months, I've read over 100.  See what I did there?  Don't kill the dreams of others because they don't line up with yours.
