While I have to give them credit for responding to the Mt. Gox leak this quickly, there is no way for people that do not work for Tradehill to review the code.

Unless there is some form of insurance against lost funds, I believe it is a bad idea to use a closed-source exchange platform, as there is no way to check if it is REALLY safe, and no guaranteed refund if it turns out to not be safe.
Open source is a double-edged sword.  On the one hand, it lets people review the code to make sure it is secure.  On the other hand, it can help hackers find vulnerabilities that they can exploit in the future.

Some things are best left hidden...
Absolutely not. Security through obscurity is the worst possible security model there is, *especially* for something like Bitcoin. Vulnerabilities will be found, regardless of whether your code is open or not. Yes, it may be easier to find them if it is open-source, but seeing as there is a financial incentive in breaking into an exchange... it being harder to find vulnerabilities will stop "friendly pentesters", but it will not stop people trying to break the system for personal gain.

Which exchange would you recommend people use?
Britcoin uses an open-source platform, and I believe there is at least one other exchange using this platform. I am not exactly sure which, this can probably be found on the wiki.

Hmm, probably not.  It will be Tradehill's turn soon enough.

Any thoughts on how this hack was carried out?  From the version of the story provided by Mt. Gox, it appears that the attacker was really rather clumsy about exploiting his account info dump.

Lulz.  Random referrals FTW.
You provided info and didn't whore your link.  I think I might go with you as my referral (I'm sizing up my options at the moment).

Thank you. I'm giving my honest opinion and just wanted some referrals if there are others that see my same view and they were going to sign up anyway. Of course I wanted to do it more tastefully than that A-hole spammer.

Tradehill is a legit exchange.  It's the second most-used exchange that uses dwolla and bases trades on USD.  I've made a number of trades on it myself, and my commission is now down to 0.50%.  Saving about 25% vs MtGox already!

Thank you for giving your experience and opinion. Again I'm just going to the next best thing behind Mt. Gox in my opinion. I just never bothered to make an account cause I was already at Mt. Gox. Now I want to move and think most ppl would.

Hilarious. The spam invite from some random TradeHill member really turns me off though... (obviously not to the fault of TradeHill itself.)

Yea I got the same email, I figured I'll start a thread about it instead and not get in your face with spam.

I think they would have good volume. Before the Mt. Gox incident there were positive reports on TradeHill. I'm simply going to what I think is the next best thing. Keys for me is volume, because that will make liquidity easy for me. That and I already have a good way to fund it. But mainly because of volume. Plus TradeHill reacted fast once they discovered the Mt. Gox database leak. They froze everything once they got wind of it, giving time for users to take safety measures. Seems like they take security more seriously than Mt. Gox which first caught wind of a breach 3 days ago and did nothing until this hit the masses today.

Since Mt.gox failed anyone going to TradeHill?

I'll be honest I started this thread to get the referrals since I just signged up at TradeHill due to Mt. Gox's failure on a security breach that was reported for a while and they just kept lying about it until they couldn't no more. No more business with them for me. I already started up a dwolla account which was how I moved money in and out of Mt. Gox, since TradeHill also excepts Dwolla the change is no big deal for me.

If anyone is doing or planning to do the same, help me out and use the referral code if you were going to migrate over there anyway. Thanks guys  Roll Eyes

So due to the Mt Gox failure you are going to Tradehill, not because they have any specific qualifications over any other exchange service?   Or is it just the Dwolla acceptance?  Please convince me to use your referral link
